Famous people who have raced R/C !!!!

Does anyone know of famous faces who have donned the Transmitter ???

I know we have the Hamilton brothers....

I once raced at Northampton Model Car Club in the 90's, this little guy who was around 3ft 10 and by the name of Warwick Davis was in my heat running a Shu Cat. As a youngster who enjoyed watching my movies i recognised him straight away....
He was the guy out of Willow, Star Wars and some other films. He was pretty good as well.

Anyone else had any experiences ????

ben 05-01-2009 10:13 PM

Neil Cragg

Pedro de la Rosa, spanish F1 driver, was one of the very best rallycross drivers of the 80's. He almost won the first ever WC in 86.

Body Paint 05-01-2009 10:22 PM

Didn't Peter Solberg race 10th off road back in the late 80's?

ashleyb4 05-01-2009 10:24 PM

Ben Sturnam is the obvious one, ex top 10 national racer and now top notch Rugby player.

Rob Hallam used to be a good club/regional guy in the NW, worked at Bury model Shop and run the club a little when it was a shop club and not a town club (used to be called Bury Model Shop Buggy Club), and he went on to present Men and Motors.

Body Paint 05-01-2009 10:26 PM

Ben Sturnam ex top 10 at in the world you mean Chris ;)

KennyClark 05-01-2009 10:28 PM

Im pretty sure that Rubens Barrichello raced RC cars at some stage.

niggs98 05-01-2009 10:28 PM

ben sturnham is a rugby coach now i belive and played high end rugby for a few years, used to race for shumacher and tanaplan and should of had a worlds podium once ;)

william mitcham now races caterhams with his father, won a national championship with t tech and had a pred named after him

paul whitaker was a top speedway rider and shortlisted to represent his country a few years back but injury forced him out had a national a final or 2 from memory running shumacher cars,

nick damon, used to race regionally and nationally in offroad and 12th many many years ago, now presents on motors tv promoting the rc world

dare say there are loads more as well, they are just 4 off the top of my head

If you look at 1983 and 1984 you can see pics of PDLR too!

Gnarly Old Dog 05-01-2009 11:25 PM

Not an RC car racer but Ayrton Senna was a keen RC aero modeller.

He'd of been a god of course had he raced an RC car...

spenner 05-01-2009 11:30 PM

Ben Sturnham also took R/C into pro Rugby by using an RC car to take the kick holder thing to the kicker!!!

Scouser 05-01-2009 11:57 PM

Vernon Kay raced a couple of times at the maxbashing track a few years ago. A Savage owner if I remember correctly.

Oxygen 06-01-2009 12:01 AM

Frank Biela - touring car ace and Le Mans winner- raced 1/8th on road, and i think still does.

Not quite Spenner, that was us at DMS!!

An old friend of mine (Stuart - who is the "S" in DMS) is the match day stadium manager at Vicarage Road for Saracens. Shortly after Ben Sturnham joined them we sorted them out a Tamiya Bush Devil (which had a H2 facelift two years ago to coincide with the local Hummer/Landrover dealer sponsoring Saries) which was modded to carry the kicking tee out to the kicker.
It was only once Ben saw it that he and Stuart started talking and they learnt of Ben's past in R/C racing. Only problem was that in Rugby (apparently - Rugby fans please confirm) you only get so long to kick the ball after the kick is awarded and opposition players were resorting to all sorts of dirty tricks to prevent the tee from "arriving" to the kicker safely including treading on the truck, getting in its way and once it even got booted half way across the pitch.
The truck spent more time at the shop being fixed than it ever spent on the playing field, Ben actually had to drop it in a couple of times on his way home from matchdays or training and eventually the team manger called an end to its use.....

The truck I am told now sits in a cupboard at Watford FC (Vicarage Road) gathering dust.....

spenner 06-01-2009 01:12 AM

Well there you go.... the full story!!!!

I never knew that part.....

emtee 06-01-2009 01:34 AM

I seem to recall hearing the Simonite sisters (WRC..) did a bit of RC too... can anyone confirm this?

Man... that pic of Britney is quality... it is now my screensaver!!!!

Tony Stewart of NASCAR fame owns Cutom Works, a small R/C firm that makes dirt oval cars in the US.

I think I read that Alex Zanardi has a few cars that he plays with as well.

Not sure if they race proper but Johnny Herbert was a guest at a Tamiya Eurocup finals at the TEMAC track in Essex, he drove a Tamiya Benetton. WLRC also had a Touring Car meeting with a few BTCC drivers doing a guest race, I can remember Tim Harvey, Tiff Needel and ? Pinkney being there, can't remember who else.

MotoRev 06-01-2009 11:09 AM

Hehehe well I suppose Neil Cragg and Ellis stafford are superstars as they did appear on a TV show once, when being interviewed about who would win the title. It was rather amusing.

But if it had to be a racer it would have to be Masami H.

I know Top gear had that presenter who used to be the in the time trial up hill racing and did a thing on 1/5th scale. Cant remember who was driving though.

eb4_boy 06-01-2009 01:30 PM

Alex Mortimer - 2007 British GT Champion is a R/c racer, mainly rallycross also does the odd bit of electric here and there.

super__dan 06-01-2009 01:40 PM
