Cougar 2 runner.

2 Attachment(s)
Hi all,

Just thought I would share this. I have done a few builds on here so this wont be a full build as not wanting to bore you all......

I have managed to get hold of a cougar 2 from a fellow oopler in America who kindly sold it me......

The chassis came with the normal scratches and grooves and wanted to sort this. I wanted it as a runner but wanted to sort the chassis along with full rebuild.

I have had hydro-dipping and powder coating done both are and were stunning, but thought I would try this myself to see what would happen. If it was pants I wasn't really bothered as Its my racer.....

So I trotted into the garage with a block of wood, wet and dry, primer, chrome glitter base coat and candy red.

It took me 3-4 hrs a day over 3 days to get the finish and scratches out. Remember its a runner....:wub

Then primer etc...... as above and the finish I think is good enough for the shelf. I will show pictures of the others bits along the way including the finished cougar 2.

What you think lads/ladies............

Looks good Mark, I'm hoping to get started on my cougar2 soon as well its about time you had another.

Welshy40 07-12-2015 03:24 PM

Looks stunning, great work.

Chrissy C 07-12-2015 03:55 PM

Not really good enough for a runner, is it now Mark lol.

Look forward to the updates mate.

Are you managing to find all the good bits again, or are you not going for a full on Works spec this time?

MHeadling 07-12-2015 04:21 PM

Looks great! Nice job Mark

Powder coat is good for a runner as it's pretty tough and won't chip/damage as easily as paint

It's too nice to run, get an old chassis and let me get it coated for the runner

xfactor 07-12-2015 07:59 PM

Hi Lads,

Cheers for the kind words. Really happy with how it turned out. I should of taken photos before I started, but to be fair I didn't expect it to turn out as it did.

Chrissy :- As for bits YES YES YES I have some very NICE bits building up. I have,

Alloy center transmission case with machined heat sink.
What I believe to be is a Orange Cougar 2 WASP Belt.
And some new in packet stuff.;)

Marko :- Yes YOU ARE ON MY LIST my little green ELF.....:D

Welshy :- Thank you for your comment....

Peaky :- Your rite it is about time....

Looking good Mark BUT I'm a bit disappointed you didn't break out your red nuts on this buddy :p

NeilRalph77 12-12-2015 08:12 AM

How did you go on for finding the steering lever/bell cranks? I broke a bearing'd one on my team car and couldn't find one for love or money ended up having to c/bore a stock one.

xfactor 12-12-2015 12:03 PM

You should know I am not one for bling J,........:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol

I just went for new standard nuts on this as its a runner J.

The ball raced steering was on another cougar I have which is going on the shelf, so just fitted them on this for now.

The one thats going on the shelf will have coloured nuts J. But what colour ;)

Ready for electrics !!

3 Attachment(s)
Cougar 2 finished. Just need electrics and me to paint the shell. Also waiting on a clear chassis skin to turn up !! Then the track.......:D

Welshy40 12-12-2015 07:39 PM

Are you going for period electrics? Think i used a futaba 9402 and Tekin 411g with a Reedy Mr M ultra series motor. Sanyo 1700sce or scr i think as well. I did like this cars simplicity and was good fun to drive.

xfactor 12-12-2015 07:52 PM

Electrics

Hi Welshy,

I ran back in the day, Tekin 411g also black with gold. I ran System batteries blue then the black came out. I ran a corally 14T purple can. Loved the motor before that I had a Reedy Mr A 14T. Servo I had a KO 1001 FET. Best servo I ever had.

Im going in this brushless.

I have gone for a,

Nosram HD .....RED...:wub
Nosram 7.5.............:wub
Absima servo love these servos......:wub
I will be getting a Nosram shorty RED.....:wub

Not that the colour has anything to do with it :D

Will also try and get the body painted over the next couple of days.....

Welshy40 13-12-2015 05:57 AM

Ok sounds great but would go backwards on the motor to a 9 or 10 only because the gearbox cant handle that power, and yes you want a runner but dont think youll enjoy fixing it after every run.

Peakey 13-12-2015 09:42 AM

I think you may be surprised James I've run a 5.5 in my Procat with a 4mm main drive belt and it held up great!

looks really nice Mark well done on finding it, looks almost like a new build:thumbsup:

If the belt, slipper and diff are adjusted properly a 8.5 should be fine, 7.5 maybe pushing it. Used to run an 11 single twister on a 411p(still have it sitting in my XX) with trinity matched 2000 mah scr-c's back in the day with no problem. On a high grip surface I'd go 10.5 max though or you'll be eating diffs pretty quickly

xfactor 13-12-2015 10:09 AM

Motor.

Hi Welshy,

As per J, I have a mate who has ran his cougar with a 6.5 with no issues.:woot:

I will try it and start on blinky and see how it goes.

I must admit I did feel like you and was thinking around 8.5-9.5 but when the 6.5 was in it I thought go for it.

If it is too much I will certainly drop down.

I ran my RC10 all last year on 7.5 and 8.0 with no issues. The same mate had a 6.5 it that also again no issues...

Once I have tried it I will report back to let everyone how it went.

xfactor 13-12-2015 10:14 AM

Cheers Adrian,

Im pleased with how its come out. Just thinking on motor now

Peakey 13-12-2015 12:30 PM

I've got a speedpassion V4 8.5t in my XLS and it's a great motor and best of all its black and red

Ok interesting, be fun to find out. Ive a 4.5 in my lazer but that gearbox has had major development to get it to handle that power.

xfactor 17-12-2015 10:32 PM

Update !!

Had electrics come for the cougar 2 CHEERS BRY !!. I will install over the weekend and also try to get the body painted as well.

xfactor 10-01-2016 09:02 PM

They still make them in the dish wheels I have, and also 5 spoke. They are made in white, black and yellow.

Peakey 10-01-2016 11:38 PM

Looks like Mark's done a variation of the scheme that originally appeared in the RC Car Action magazine review...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...pspjh0zn89.jpg;)

A well built & set-up Cougar2 gearbox should easily handle the power of a decent brushless motor - I've been running a 6.5 in mine for a while & its been fine. I love the Pro spec diffs - they just seem to take the abuse & stay smooth & free for ages!

xfactor 11-01-2016 02:57 PM

Cheers guys,

Peaky.........

Yes I will be giving it a run at Broxtowe snowman series. Think its the 24th Jan, but must check.

Dan..........

Yes its that design. If you remember back over 2 years ago :woot: I did this on my cougar 2 build in purple with orange stripes as the above picture as well.

That cougar 2 is now Penguin bodies show car on Ebay for the cougar 2 bodies.......;)

Yes - I remember now! My Cougar1 & TopCat feature in Steve's (Mr Penguin) ebay adverts for his bodies for those respective cars ;)

Your shells features the 90s-tastic 'splatter' paint that I think you may got the idea from RC10Talk member geeforce59's rebuilt Cougar2 Works which featured the same RC Car Action inspired paint scheme;

xfactor 11-01-2016 05:05 PM

This design is what I ran when the works came out in around 1993 to combat the rc10. That was one reason the works gearbox was moved back as the rc10 had the upper hand on bumpy and lesser griped tracks.

The splatter I was doing in 1990 when I started painting shells. The first one I tried was all black with red, blue, green and yellow splats.......:lol::lol:

Looked awesomcrap...... and then tried other designs. Yes I was inspired by this when I seen it back in around 92/93 when the works came out..........:thumbsup:

Cougar 2 runner ready !!

So its taken a little longer than first thought, but the Cougar 2 restored runner is ready for its first run.

I will be going to the awesome Broxtowe track this Sunday, to test and give it its first run out........

Really pleased with the finish for a runner. Posting pictures now.....
