With so many talented painters on here - are there any ideas to help organise / improve things for the painters? A dedicated paint forum? sticky threads for pro-painters or eve sub forums for pro-painters? |
sub forums would be sweet jimmy for each of us would be cool mate plus people always want to know how busy we are so links to website s would be good or something like an update system, just idea s mate:D

Nice work Dale, loving Pauls new updated scheme, looks nice!!
As for Chazz, shame on you!!! LOL You have one of the best sprayers at your mercy and all you ask for is a two colour with a simple fade...TUT TUT. Dale when he is not looking, spary up somthing exciting, let him keep his blue and silver but add some Kropy bling to it, dont tell him, just do it, you know he will love it when it is finished!!!!! Chazz we all know a good paint scheme is worth at least 2 seconds a lap, Paul tells me you need at least 4 already!!! (only joking, Paul did not say that.........Ellis did) LOL |

Hey Kropy...
Well it looks as if I'm the first customer in the questionas and answers:blush: I've been painting shells for friends and myself for years, I've been using a sticky backed plastic for the masking, recently I've run out of masking film... I've tried several different brands of sticky films, but the problem I'm having is the glue is being desolved by the thinners in the paint(Pactra), so when I remove the maskings it leaves a sticky mess, this can be removed (although it's a right pain!!)... Here it comes... What masking medium/film do you guys use?? Also I presume you cut most of your designs out on a die cutter?? I use a good old scalpel and patience... I've attched a couple of images of recent shells, please cast your expert eye and give me any advice or feedback, good or bad;)... Cheers JIm:p |
Jimbo!!
Didn't realise you painted shells. :) I cut ALL my designs by hand. None of these new fangled plotters....yet. ;) I use Fasmask now. Did use Divelys but its costing just about as much now, and the quality has dropped recently. I always used to use Tamiya masking tape before. The cheaper non-descript stuff always did what you mentioned and left gluey deposits behind, requiring a carefull bit of clean up with the meths. Jimmy, sub sections for each of us would be cool and easier for people to find each painter. Seeing as its advertising for each of us, I'm sure we all wouldn't mind doing you a favour, wether its advertising oOple on our sites....as I already do :). Or making regular donations. What do ya say fellas? |
try liquid mask Jim.as tell said its miles better than masking tape or masking film

totally agree with the telmyster on the paint mask dively is good but fasmask is just as good and cheaper too as for oople sub sections and advertising im already doing that and donations or a few favours is cool with me ps tel you dont need a plotter and they re ok but i dont use mine to make paint masks just a few useful bits and bobs :) |
hey...
Thanks for the replies!!! Next daft question, where do I get the fasmask or divelys from?? plus I asume you apply the liquid mask to the whole shell, then how do you create your designs??? using a blade/scalpel, then rub off the unwanted masks?? Thanks JIm:p |
darren at dms has fasmask mate je spares has divley and fasmask but you can compare prices at je spares and the divley is more expensive now than fasmask
1 clean shell 2 paint in a layer of paint mask and leave to dry then ad another coat at a time and let dry ad 4 coats for best results mark your design on the out side of the shell with marker pen then use a craft knife to cut out the designs inside the shell mate then start with the first section your painting usual dark colours first and use a tooth pick to pull the section you are painting out and so on have fun jimbo |
Yep, just do the design in the same order as you would with tape Jim.
Its miles easier with the masking fluid too as you can see through it when you're cutting the design. You dont need as much pressure with the blade either. Bonus! :D |
Liquid mask is the daddy, also, if you run out of time to spray and have to leave it a week or two, then a fresh coat of liquid mask freshens it all up.
I have noticed that the Divleys I got at the moment, 1) stinks and makes my drains stink after cleaning the brush, 2) seems pretty thin compared to how it was. |
that will be a bad batch if it get s too cold it gets affected and send it smelly and runny the pot ive got at theminute is well thick like syrup and is really good
|
might keep the faith then, I got another litre of the stuff to go through before I buy more
|
Hey fellas...
Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated... Gona give the fasmask a go, I'll keep you all informed as to the results:woot: JIm:p |
|
is that a new one shimage from your travels :eh?:
|
Hmm, we had some bad divelys that had 'gone off'. and we just binned it. after a short while it starts to mouldy in the lid. Thats when its time to bin it. Its starts to get worse and worse, and you end up needig about 9 coats, or it goes on too thin.
....not to mention the smell. Although, we do have the twins now, so the baby sick smell is still lingering.:woot: |

Jim ~ All of the advice that has been given so far is 100% correct, The Parma Fasmask is the cats arse, If you don't want to wait to the liquid mask to dry you could always use a spray stencil (just like the window mask material)http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk/stencil...m&parentcat=57
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask, I think we can all give you some good friendly advice  |
