CAT rebuild

I still have my old CAT, was my first real competition grade car, thought it was about time it got some love and a rebuild/update, would like to do a few meetings at our indoor track just to see how she stands up against the current crop.

Ha ha....fancy seeing you on here Damon  Spotted Adrian on here too. Pity you didn't have this ready for the Vintage Nats next weekend but I'm sure there will be more vintage racing soon.

I've been in contact with Adrian, looking at doing some cougar stuff possibly with him.

Yes it is a pity, I have my XX-CR as well.......

Retro RC 18-04-2015 11:30 AM

fathead 19-04-2015 06:42 AM

Nice!

I think I have settled on doing what I would call a 'hotrod' build for this, keep it looking virtually stock but replacing a lot of the original parts with new reproductions with minor improvements, for instance I am going to cnc up new gearbox alloy plates, also tossing up the idea of substituting the stock plastic gearbox cases with molded carbon versions.

fathead 19-04-2015 10:57 AM

Stripped the old girl down tonight.

Bosscat slipper and layshaft/pulleys, also the rear diff appears to be a 1 piece alloy unit

Peakey 19-04-2015 11:02 AM

That's an old wasp racing alloy rear diff, I have a matching front to that diff very nice

We were quite lucky back in the day Justin our local importer brought in a lot of option parts for us to spend money on

fathead 19-04-2015 11:13 AM

Just looking it seems front diff is alloy as well, so I have a matching set.:woot:

I was clueless when I bought this when I was maybe 14-15yrs old, so end of the 80's I guess, lucky I kept it!

Managed to get a new pulley for my alloy front box though

fathead 20-04-2015 01:10 AM

Pretty!

I think I will take a pattern off the front towers while I have it apart and cnc up some delrin ones and keep the originals in a box for safe keeping

Peakey 20-04-2015 09:52 AM

Ooooo delrin nice would love a set of those

fathead 20-04-2015 10:07 AM

You might just get lucky ;)

Retro RC 20-04-2015 10:14 AM

Didn't take long for the vintage bug to catch aye damon:thumbsup:

fathead 20-04-2015 10:20 AM

Nope

fathead 20-04-2015 09:19 PM

I might have a fiddle with machining some raceable arms as well

fathead 21-04-2015 03:38 AM

And if someone starts to tease, he must be ready to please. So when can we expect our free CF and delrin parts? :D

fathead 21-04-2015 07:14 AM

Now someone is being cheeky!
I might cut out some carbon late this week or early next will see, have to order some more delrin too as I'm basically out, tossing up whether to do black or white delrin bits, or maybe both

That sounds good to me too  And they always look better in white ;)

fathead 21-04-2015 07:49 AM

Well they won't be freeeeeeee but making 1 or 5 isn't much different for me

Retro RC 21-04-2015 09:13 AM

Got my JC racing wheels today all black dish and all black 5 spoke :thumbsup:ordered white and yellow 5 spoke because it said black was out of stock but flicked john an email and he sorted it out.

Just waiting on a couple of bits to turn up now then I start my own thread instead of hijacking yours Damon :woot:

fathead 21-04-2015 09:24 AM

haha all good, I'm sure I will post liberally in your thread......

I was going to go with white wheels but the more I think about it black will be better, will go with my standard black with a dash of green paint jobs

Peakey 21-04-2015 09:55 AM

Jc wheels are the best I run them on my Procat

fathead 21-04-2015 11:06 AM

Nice, was just reading your build thread.......

Peakey 21-04-2015 11:43 AM

I had to re install photobucket last year and have lost a few pics which is annoying. And gainsy managed to lose lukes Procat thread the other week that was really crammed with great info.

fathead 21-04-2015 09:21 PM

I spied the front towers in the pic of your car and was investigating what they were, looks like something I can do pretty easily.....

Peakey 22-04-2015 08:17 AM

There Team Tanaplan toweres to be honest I'm not sure if there the same length as standed as there for a camber adjustment kit.
I'll try and get some pics and measurements tonight for you. They should be easy to copy as there square

I found 17 pages of that thread that are cached in google by mistake just now, saved them too

Ah? That means nothing to me lol. And there was about 39 pages in total I think.

OptimaFan 22-04-2015 11:23 AM

Is there no older forum backup somewhere, that the thread can be retrieved from?

It means I have 17 of the 39 pages saved with photos that I can share, heaps of interesting pics and info in just those 17 pages too

fathead 23-04-2015 03:42 AM

Some more drawing (cut simulation of)

I am going to borrow Luke's idea for protecting the undertray/belt

Also list of parts to make when my delrin sheet gets here.

T079 - in various versions to allow R.C. & camber changes (so carbon T154 to suit too)
A215
T077
T111/112 (hopefully I can machine the pocket for the ball well enough will see)
T109/110
T054 - again various versions to allow R.C. & camber changes
T160
T078
T156 - will do stock height and one similar to the tanaplan ones to allow longer shocks on the front

I will keep these parts looking as close to stock as possible, but obviously won't have all the nicely rounded corners as the stock molded parts

Also keeping my eye out for some alloy stock of sufficient dimensions to machine up some T055
