Atomic Carbon DB-01 Rear Shock Towers

Hi All,

I've been email Jonathan at Atomic Carbon and he is willing to produce some modified rear shock towers for the DB-01 that can run the TRF 501X shocks without all the associated problems with their extra length.

The only downside is that to make it economical enough a minimum order quantity of 10 is required. I haven't got a quote at the moment as that will all depend on the final design/quantity ordered.

Obviously, I'll have one but are there 9 others of you out there that are interested?

If you are can you add you names to the post and then I'll go back to Jonathan.

Cheers,

Ian

DCM 26-10-2008 07:26 PM

depending on the price, I would either have one..... or two :woot:

General Accident 26-10-2008 09:03 PM

As DCM says dependant on the price I will have 2 at least.

i4n 26-10-2008 09:16 PM

I've just dropped Jonathan an email asking for a rough price, when I know - you will too!

Ian

i4n 27-10-2008 10:02 PM

I've just had news on a rough price back from Jonathan.

The price (based on being made from 4mm carbon fibre and an order of 10) will be in the region of £10 - £14 each + postage.

The firm price from Atomic Carbon will be known once drawings have been made and the exact area of CF is known per tower and also on the total amount of towers purchased.

Once again, these prices are only estimates but will be formed up when the design is finalised and the quantity is known.

If you would like once, please add your name to the thread so I can collate numbers.

i4n 11-11-2008 10:15 AM

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the pause in getting back to you - I haven't noticed the thread appearing on my "unread posts" bit.

We're not at the 10 towers needed for Jonathan to make them at a reasonable price yet , as soon as we get the numbers required I'll be in contact with him again.

For the record I have the following interest:

Me - 1
DCM - 1 (maybe 2)
GA - 2
dimblum - 1
Eddie168 - 1
robbo145 - 1
AJ - 1

So that's 8 for definite (9 possibly) so ideally I'd like to get to 10 definite before placing the order (otherwise I'm going to be left out of pocket and I don't want that to happen).

I was thinking about delivery - I will get them all sent to me and then I will distribute them out to all of you for cost (DCM will get a personal delivery!) if that is OK?

Ian

A.J. Gee 11-11-2008 07:30 PM

If all goes well and we get enough people that want the shock towers, will you be shipping to the states?

I'll ship anywhere at cost.

linger 11-11-2008 09:53 PM

2 for me

General Accident 11-11-2008 10:43 PM

Excellent. Look forward to the next step. Do you want a Paypal deposit or anything?

simoncook 12-11-2008 09:35 AM

Hi there, I would be interested in a set of these too, I can pay by cheque/paypal or whatever.

Does the price drop a little, if more people are interested?

Excellent, that's the 10 we need now then :D

I'm email Jonathan when I get back from work with the request. I've got to send him an original off to get the basic size from before it can adjusted for what we want, drawn up and the exact area of CF calculated (it will be 4mm and bullet proof!). Once that happens I can get a quote and lead times etc.

I don't know how long the process will take but as soon as I know anything I'll update the thread.

When a price is known, I will be looking to take a non-refundable deposit of 50% (as I'll have to pay everything up front). I will PM all concerned with my PayPal address (apart from DCM who can give me the cash). I will then be looking for the remainder of the price plus shipping once the total amount is known.

I hope that is acceptable to all.

Ian

The more the merrier mate! Economies of scale will mean the more people we have the smaller the price will be.

Remember though, it is only the rear tower being made and it will be modified to allow the use of the TRF shocks from the 501X (they are longer than the standard DB-01 items). The front tower works fine with the upgraded shocks.

Bump :)

i4n 18-11-2008 11:06 PM

Simon,

What was the point of the bump? I said I would update the thread when I had any information and PM all concerned with my PayPal address for the deposit.

I have no information, hence no update.

When I have any information I will update the thread.

Hi All,

Just a quick update, the original tower has now been sent off and a AC have produced a CAD drawing of the original.

I'm going to discuss the changes over the weekend with a fellow DB-01 runner and then get these sent back/prototype drawn up.

Ian

Quick Update

Hi All,

An update on progress - a design has been agreed between myself and Jontahan. It will also allow the use of the standard shocks as well as the TRF one as it includes two sets of mounting holes (more options!). Jonathan is making a prototype to send out to me for evaluation.

As it will be flat you will need to get spacers to move the shocks out a tadge.

Also, the upper arms ball studs won't be able to screw into the CF like they do on the plastic tower. You will need to get hold of some correct sized ball studs that have an internal thread and then hold them on with a screw and threadlock, again spaced out a little from the tower with washers (I have ordered some more of the one that goes onto the steering arm from the servo, Tamiya Pt Number: 9808012 - I will let you know if these work!)

Ian

Spoolio 26-11-2008 05:58 PM

Sounds promising, looking forward to the next update.

Another update in a day (I should have given you the other update a couple of days ago.........)

Jonathan has had the prototype made, picture shows it next to an original tower. It is in the post to me to try out so I'll let you know how it goes.

I have also had the price confirmed at £15 each (£1 more than my top estimate, sorry). They are bigger than the RB5 rear towers AC also make that sell at £18 so still a bargain in my eyes.

I'll leave the possibility of anyone else adding to the order list until Friday 5th December and then I'll be looking at final numbers to pass on. All those that have been in contact with me expect a PM around then with the details for sending me your PayPal deposits!

As it stands, the list of orders is:

Me - 1 (possibly 2 as I'm sure I'll find a way to break one!)
DCM - 1 (possibly 2)
General Accident - 2
Dimblum - 1
Eddie168 - 1
robbo145 - 1
A.J. Gee - 1
Linger - 2
simoncook - 1
gargadud - 1
e-JP - 1
MJX - 1

There may also be a possibility of Jonathan keeping these as a stock item too.

Ian

gargadud 26-11-2008 09:00 PM

if you can ship to Switzerland for a reasonable price I would go for 1 piece.

Cheers

I will ship for cost, which according to the Royal Mail starts at 50p (but I'd guess 1st class would be about £1.50 in a nice padded envelope).

I'll add you to the list then!

Ian

e-JP 27-11-2008 12:51 AM

Count me in too. for 1 shipped to Canada.
Thx.

Thanks for your quick feedback.

Hello All,

Tower arrived in the post today, it looks mighty fine!

I've got it on the car but it's not quite there yet. The upper arm ball joints are on and fine (I used a Tamiya 9804206 in the end, the longer of the two "nut" ball studs. These went on directly with no spacers or anything:thumbsup:. The others that I thought I was going to use in my earlier post will will work but will need spacing out a bit).

The shocks are nearly there, but I don't have any long enough M3 screws in the bits box. I have got a 20mm screw on at the moment with 8mm of spacers and there isn't enough thread left to put a nut on securely. I have ordered some 25 and 30 mm M3 screws from Model Fixings and they should do the job nicely. The shocks are laid back at a bit on an angle so I'll have a play with a couple of washers too when the longer screws arrive.

The TRF shocks I have are in the top holes, without any internal limiters and the droop is spot on

All is looking good.

Photos attached of it on the car (please ignore the Dirt Hawg tyres - been thrashing it around in the street and am saving my mini spikes!)

i4n 30-11-2008 07:27 PM

Hi All,

I ran the buggy with the tower today at Caldicot - no problems whatsoever. I had to take one of the spacers out and the shocks didn't bind or anything (I just didn't tighten the nuts up too tight).

I think Thunderbirds are go!

Just awaiting any last minute takers for the tower - I will PM all interested people at the end of the week with my PayPal address. I'll want a 50% deposit of £7.50, non-refundable (if you change your mind, if it all goes Pete Tong from my end then you'll get it back). If you send it as a gift I won't get any charges taken from it (hint hint!). When I get them in my hands I'll PM all of you again for delivery address etc. and also for the remainder of the balance + postage (at cost).

they are a mighty beefy items to have on your car, and will give you the option of stock shocks and TRF ones.....

Spoolio 30-11-2008 07:53 PM

Are they Losi springs that I see there?

They are indeed! They are slightly shorter than the Tamiya ones so were ace with the limiters in the shocks as they didn't add too much pre load at full extension.

Not on there now as after I took the photo I set the back end up properly with the limiters removed they were then too short and I had to wind the shock adjusters right down to get the drive shafts level.

And the pink clashed with the blue

If you'd have said that in the early 90's you'd have been lynched by an angry mob of shell suit wearers. Funny how fashion changes innit ;).
