535D

Anyone had any experience with the BMW 535D, i am told this is "the" diesel engine to have but i would prefer an owners opinion rather than a magazines test.

I need a bigger car, the A3 is awesome but the boot can be a tad small for going racing, i quite like the idea of the 5 series touring

Northy 16-10-2008 10:15 AM

You'll just run it into something and dent it all again :woot:

I used to work for BMW, so know a little about these.

From what I can remember this is the 3.0L twin turbo diesel and is an absolute work of art. Without a doubt the best diesel engine on the market today in a superb car.

However, buy one of these at your peril...you'll struggle to get rid of it later for anywhere near what it's worth.

Best value BMW today is the 320D touring sport

Hi Lee

you mean the biturbo 6-in-line 535D?
It goes like a rocket, until 120 km/h you are not really slower than a M5 V10
You have to be carefull with the Turbochargers, cause they sometimes have a problem with "switch"-system between the little and the big charger...blocated.
suspension is all Aluminium, so it wears out a little faster, specialy on front.

Greetings from switzerland
Maurice

Lee 16-10-2008 10:26 AM

Col, Maurice,

Yes thats the one, i have been told its a bit of a rocketship, 0-60 in 6.5 isn't bad for a big car, and 35mpg ~

It wont be for a few months yet but i dont fancy a range rover and i quite like the look of the M sport models :)

Plus i have put 20k on the audi since june so i need to move that on before the miles effect its value

my dad had the 335D, that was a great car and a rocket ship. You will have no trouble fitting all your stuff in there, they're huge :)

Yep! 2 F8 haulers, 2 transmitter boxes, 2 large tables, 3 chairs, sleeping bags, pillows, 3 kids. And my large tent accross mine and matt's laps on the back seats. :woot:

mattym0310 16-10-2008 07:04 PM

but the one lee is looking at is the bigger version so there is loads more room

Belsten 16-10-2008 07:40 PM

you earn far too much mate

Lee 16-10-2008 08:07 PM

i dont think thats possible, whatever you earn you spend ;)

showtime 16-10-2008 08:22 PM

i'm tempted for a diesel estate car as although it has a MASSIVE boot the S8 isn't as versatile as an estate for racing etc
personally i think the later shaped Audi A6 Avants are stunning looking cars for estates, prob even better looking than the saloon equivalents :wub
i know the BMW engine is regarded as very good but the Audi 3.0Tdi seems to have plenty of grunt plus if you add in the quattro 4wd you're never getting stuck in a muddy field after a wet meeting again

go on you know you want to ;)

Lee
Get a Disco. Its the best car ive drove in a bit. Tonnes of room for racing gear but only does 25 mpg when you stick the pedal to the metal. What about Q7? Audi are very nice aswell.

Lee 16-10-2008 09:44 PM

I do like my audi and i would definately have another, i like the disco's but i fancy something quick too, as i cant take the toy out every day :(

Mike Hudson 16-10-2008 10:23 PM

Just the ferrari you need ;) can fit plenty of haulers in this 360 :woot: apparerntly will do 0-60 in under 6sec aswell  maybe i'll leave the price out of the equation though :p

Why? Whats your reason?

When ever you see a review of the Audi compared to the Equivelant Merc / BMW it always seems to fall just short. I have no fear it will be an excellent carbut for some reason i like the look of the BMW M more :)

MattADH 17-10-2008 08:17 AM

Why not an A4 diesel? The boot is pretty big and there are loads of options on engine and performance. Economy is very good (better than the BMW I am led to believe).

I have a 140BHP 2.0 Audi A4 saloon and the wife a 120D 1-series BMW and although the 1-series has 20+ BHP, the Audi's 2.0 engine in my opionion is better than the BMW...

That said, the 535 is a proper piece of kit as I found out when we went to Holland for a race.

Lee 17-10-2008 09:28 AM

Cheers Matt, i have liked the 5 series for a while but i have never felt "old" enough to get one but with the sports pack on it looks pretty smart, all reviews say they would rather have the 535D than the M5 :o

Southwell 17-10-2008 09:33 AM

The M5 is fragile, the rear diffs seem to explode

Heres a diesel v petrol review.

Lee 17-10-2008 09:34 AM

Ya Barred :o

I'll have a look at that when i get home

Southwell 17-10-2008 09:35 AM

Its just the top gear one when they put it up against a v8 petrol 5 series.

daz 17-10-2008 12:08 PM

Lee-mag il sell you me Punto for 30 grand, its got no seats in the back so plenty of room for haulers and w**k mags. And it will do 150 mph and will give you 80 mpg. And its a proper fanny magnet

Lee 17-10-2008 12:10 PM

Tempting

You mean, you look a tw*t driving it? :woot:

daz 17-10-2008 12:13 PM

No its got black out windows full of air bubbles so no one can see you. I will even supply a matching hoody with "my punto is ace" written on the back:thumbsup:

Chris Doughty 17-10-2008 02:30 PM

wouldn't it be ace if Vinny was the same with full sized cars as he is with RC cars...

he could buy a new one and then sell it the next day for 1/2 the price

Billy Dutton 17-10-2008 10:17 PM

I think that model had a recall on "faulty indicators" http://www.btinternet.com/~knutty.knights/bmw.gif ;)

I love estates, Tourings and Advants or what ever else they are called. I have test driven a A6 3.0Tdi Advant and a 330D Touring. I love them think that cars look better in the bigger version of a Estate. I know that Audi were doing a deal with the Le Mans A6 for about 400 a month all in. Have you also consider a Alfa 159 awesome car also very nice too drive and a great car for cruising, you get alot of looks.

ianjoyner 20-10-2008 12:29 PM

Have you thought about the 530i? 0-60 6.5s, 35 mpg, not quite so much early torque as the diesel, but plenty for day to day driving and an awsome top end if you're caning it. They sound ace and probably quite a bit cheaper than the 535d too, worth a drive.

bigred5765 22-10-2008 11:28 PM

lee just been looking at the performance figures on that bmw, there mad but for insane check tunit.co.uk for a little over £400 they take it from bhp 286 torque 427 V-CR
to bhp 326 torque 465
thats just insane in a estate car

showtime 23-10-2008 06:19 AM

i know its not exactly relevant to the car in question but Audi sell the 572BHP RS6 as an estate :o

now thats insane

da999 23-10-2008 07:22 AM

go for a 535d - you won't be disappointed! I moved from a subaru sti with 300bhp+ and the BMW is virtually as fast, auto lovely, really luxurious but fast, realistically wont do much above 30mpg unless you drive lots on the motorway but an awesome car!

Lee 23-10-2008 08:19 AM

I do a lot of motorway/dual carraigeway driving.

Showtime is that the one with the Gallardo engine

Liono, i think it would be chipped, eventually, the toy arrives tommorrow

Chrislong 23-10-2008 08:28 AM

Lee, there are a lot of family hatch's/saloons around for bargain prices at the moment - you've picked a good time to look for one, although I bet you've lost a wack on the Audi if you PX it?

Ive just PX'd the Focus, for a Mondeo Titanium X 2.2Tdci. Low mileage, 3 year old, over £22k new, and bought it for 1/3rd of the price. Its also going to save me a fortune over the Focus!!!!

Lee 23-10-2008 08:32 AM

I have probably lost 2-3k on the audi but i have done 20k + in it so im not too fussed.

i should get nearly 10k for it, then stick another 10 ish on the beemer
