PC problems

I'm having a problem on my home laptop - this is what happened:

Some guy from work sent a document that needed a .net something or other to view it, so I downloaded and installed it last night.

Today it starts going off it's tits. Keys on the keyboard not working, start menu popping up and closing like it's on crack.

I uninstalled the .net crap and re-booted.

Then some keys on the kb started working again, but the start menu is still going off it's tits!

Run a full scan with AVG - found nothing.

Any ideas?

Start it up and unplug your keyboard, does it still do it?

Northy 02-10-2008 08:17 PM

It's the built in keyboard :(

Keys like 'e' 'r' and 't' don't type the letters, they are opening up windows and stuff as if there is like a function button or something pressed :(

e brings up my computer
r brings up run
t just doesn't do anything

possible your .net framework didn't install properly, where did you download it from?

Northy 02-10-2008 08:22 PM

No, f does nothing - type the letter f or do find.

Should I do the whole f8 thing?
How do I do a restore?

G

Southwell 02-10-2008 08:22 PM

Start it in safe mode and see if it still does those things.

A restore is:

Start
programs
accessories
system tools

Northy 02-10-2008 08:34 PM

Southwell, it still does it in safe mode? :(

Is it the key sticking? Any fix for it?

G

Southwell 02-10-2008 08:37 PM

Tap it a few times? I have had laptops do it before, with it always being the keyboard. Although it seems funny how it just happened on that install. I would try a restore first.

Northy 02-10-2008 08:40 PM

I just twat'ed it a load of times and it seems to be working in safe mode now, I'll reboot and see what happens in std mode

Possible the ribbon cable is coming loose under the keyboard?

Northy 03-10-2008 07:34 PM

I'll have to take the twat in bits

Mmmmm, might buy a new one

Actually, the mother/father in laws want a laptop to get film off a digital camcorda and do some editing type stuff on it, what sort of spec would it need to be?

Depends how much they wanna get into it: a standard laptop woul dbe summit like a Dell 5125, dual core, 2gb ram 160gb hdd, their about £400, or you can go higher, but they seem good to me.

Richard Lowe 03-10-2008 08:37 PM

Plug a USB keyboard in G, see what works then.

If it's still doing it, disconnect the built in keyboards ribbon cable.

If it's still doing it then it has to be software related.

Northy 03-10-2008 08:46 PM

I've rolled it back to last Friday, still no joy.

I'll take the twat in bits tomorrow. I don't have a USB kb :(

Cheers on the ideas for a Dell

Most keyboards are only a couple of scrww underneath and clips on top, by the f1, f7 etc keys. Or under a cover at the top. Be careful or you will break something if your too heavy handed, if your not confident get someone else to check it out. And remember man fat might need some prying too.

Lee 03-10-2008 09:28 PM

just buy a mac G

Southwell 03-10-2008 10:20 PM

No, your not a homo, dont do it.

col300 03-10-2008 11:46 PM

As Rich say's, if you try a USB keyboard this will determine if it's your actual laptop keyboard or a software problem. Certainly worth trying this before taking it to bits!

I have heard of similar happenings before with certain spyware. You could try Spybot.

if the computer is doing this the windows key is stuck down. It is the one with the windows flag on it usually down towards the bottom left of the keyboard. Oops should have read on already been mentioned.Keyboards on laptops do tend to break, you may be able the to get one on ebay cheap. Usually the keyboard is held by a large screw coming through the bottom of the laptop and it is sometimes marked and as southwell said there is usually some other screws or tabs holding it in on top. What model of laptop is it? I can usually get the repair manual for most of them which will show you how the keyboard is fixed.

Northy 04-10-2008 09:07 AM

Hi guys,

Thanks - I'll download that software and give it a try

The laptop is an old Sharp one - PC-GP1515

I'll try and lay my hands on a USB kb.

Cheers,

G
