Anyone got a Traxxas Slash?
 

Well, has anybody got one? Are they any good for as a basher/occasional low-level race truck?

ive used mine so far for just general bashing about but tommorow im gonna race it at southport.
there's only one problem i can see so far and its the gearcover is open at the bottom so dust and other bit's and bob's can get in:(

Is it stock, or have you upgraded the motor? What does it go like then? Let us know how you get on at Southport.

the truck was stock until this morning but ive only dropped in a novak super sport brushless as the std motor is full of sand.
its quite quick and very robust though in std trim
it comes with an optional pinion for more speedwhich ive tried at wrexham in the "others" group and it beat a b4 with a 7t brushless in it and a hpi rs4 nitro it handles like a 2cv on tarmac but on grass it leans just like a real corr truck.

Anything thats got loads of roll is fine by me, its now on the Santa list!

I've got a slash... they are a fantastic budget basher. Change out the wheels for something with a little grip though as the stock just suck for anything on the track. If you are racing in spec class with the truck then you might be stuck.

Couple things I did to improve the roll travel:

Lower the server by mounting it below the deck. Change out the shocks for some B44 shocks running green back, silver front. I run 20wt oil in the back and 45wt oil in the front. That gives it just enough sloppy grip on loose dirt tracks. If you can change out the tires, that will be the biggest improvement you could ever do. Even if you change them out for two 1:8 scale buggy fronts... anything on the wheels helps.

The problem with the tires is they use an extremely large sidewall with little ground patch. I thought one way to counter the wall would be something like a two layer foam, soft out/hard in for low speed grip to high roll. It's just the tire.

I'd like to race it stock if anyone else turned up with one. For me part of the appeal is leaving it stock, it's tough and handles nicely, but I think grip is it's enemy. The suspension is soft, so if there is too much grip it rolls too much, I wouldn't put better tyres on it because I think it handles nice when the grip is low. It's a nice balance compared to a typical 2WD buggy, it turns in really well, doesn't want to understeer like most buggies and if the back does step out it's really easy to get a nice power slide. Again too grippier surface (carpet / tarmac) spoils this though as it tends to roll rather than slide and cock and spin the inside wheel. It worked okay on grass as you can see in the vid, I tried it on a carpet track and the suspension was just too soft, I'd love to race it on dirt, but we don't have a dirt track. I've run it at a gravel BMX track, it was a lot of fun on the gravel, not enough power for huge jumps, but manages the small stuff nicely. As a low speed basher I really enjoy it, probably an excellent first time RC, if I got the chance I'd love to race it stock on a loose surface.

I wonder if the Caster 1/8th will compare dimensionally to the Slash, certainly the Traxxas is pretty big for the claimed 1/10th scale and is the same size as their Slayer which is based on Revo parts. I'm guessing the Caster electric will be 4WD, similar to the nitro version? While the Slash is 2WD, it's dimensionally the same as the Revo based Slayer but has completely different underpinnings.

The caster is more in line with the AE SC8 in that it is based on a buggy drivetrain. 4wd indeded.

So anybody racing these in the UK yet?

A mate has one of these and after a couple of goes this weekend, I think I might use the interest rate drop in my mortgage to buy one, great fun.

About 1:45 the Slash stuff starts. They are super fun, and cheap, you cant beat em.

How about Slash' at Newbury? Any chances?

The Slash trucks are pretty huge in the US. Most tracks have a stock class that allows certain upgrades, but otherwise stock trucks which makes for absolutely excellent competition.
Not to mention that they're an absolute blast just in general, plus you can run a Slash in any weather and keep all those race level 4wd buggy's electronics in working order ;)

Yep everytime I go to the track they always say a slash would be good for me. Might have to try it sometime, but I think the class isnt going anywhere, it will be around probably forever.

Had my 1st go with it today using my old 2000 nicds (need to get a lipo cutoff before I use lipo)

It's now under the stairs covered in mud, I might just shower it off.

one thing to say about it....Absolutely brilliant fun, I was even using the steerwheel tranny it came with rather than my preferred medium of sticks.

Quite fancy one just so I can run something "different" at our local club and this looks quite tough and not so fast that it'd be a handful. What's it like on carpet with stock tyres though? (Bear in mind that my Tamiya Mini is totally undriveable on carpet even with a stock silver can motor - zero grip = spins on every corner)

Maybe depends on the carpet, ours is fairly grippy, mine was certainly driveable. Following the instructions in the manual for on road driving setup helps. I'm still the only person at our club with one, otherwise I would happily race it. It's not particuarly fast, but I love the way it handles, turns in really well, the geared diff can be a little annoying, so you need to take care on the throttle coming out of corners or the inside wheel spins up for fun. sold my b44 today to buy one of these after seeing them at bury on sunday. if we get enough intrest we will hold a heat for them at NNRC

this class has gotten huge in the states. my local track on a tuesday night (off road carpet) 1 heat buggy, 2 heat truck and 2 heat of slash.


the races are close because the rules are box stock. its like sedan was when it started.....FUN. it is a no crying because your car got bumped class. and they are durable.

my fear is the associated version will dilute the class and ruin the "equalness of the competition".

I hope not, because I may end up running both slash and SC10 classes because Stadium Truck is diluted here,
we only had 5 last week, and 12 in slash. And at the other track all they got in electric is slash period, that's it.

I agree aith everyone here Slash's are good fun for sure. I have run mine at bury a few times now...last sunday i got it a bit more sorted and stopped it from rolling on high speed bends (lowered it right down)

Have to say it was very good - finished 2,2,2 and first in qualifiers and that was with 2wd buggies!

mine only has standard speedo with a cheap make brushless motor in it and it is fast ish

handling and drivind wise they are just so easy to drive.....

planning on up-rating next to give it some more power - think ill butcher some cells to make up a bigger pack
