Looking for SW/Devon Micro racers intersted in Saturday Racing ?

http://s245.photobucket.com/user/sos...34082.jpg.htmlHi All,

Thought it was about time we reached out to see if there are any micro owners in devon/south west who might be interested in Saturday racing?
Me and my business partner run sos-mmrc and pretty much every saturday we and a small group of friends (4-6 people) go racing in local Halls.

Were based in Bideford North Devon and the hall we have ben using most recently is in northam 2.5 miles from us as it is one of the larger halls around at 22m long by 8m wide with plenty of comfortable pitting area and nice kitchen etc. We have enough carpet to cover most halls and a basic infra red timing system from carl at rctiming.com. It may not be as flash as the amb kit but the transponders are under £20 each.
We usually setup a mix of carpeted and uncarpeted sections with a selcetion of features/jumps.

For some reason photo bucket has gone dodgy so cant upload more pics now but will as soon as i can?

Any way were a friendly yet competaive bunch who really don't take things to seriously and have a good laugh while we're racing.
Would be great to get some more people interested as it would improve the racing by having more heats and extra marshals.

Cheers All

Team 36 29-12-2013 11:55 PM

When do race outdoors!! What sort off scale cars do you race outside !! Do you have a postcode?? Is it electric or nitro track

SOSx 30-12-2013 12:11 AM

Hi Team 36,

We normally race on most Saturdays on the astro track in the summer (although often sundays as well). The track is located at EX22 7XH about 10 miles from Bideford.

We have been racing both Micro's and 1/8th the last couple of years although the track is a bit small for the 1/8th so we're considering moving over to 1/10th this year as it would suite them better. So most liekely this year it will be 1/14th and 1/10th.

Where are you based and what do you currently drive?

Team 36 30-12-2013 12:23 AM

I have 1/10 scale 2wd & 4wd I'm from wellington Somerset I race Tiverton & mendip I have few mates that are from North Devon I could be up 4 summer racing down your way !!

jonathan may 30-12-2013 12:38 AM

im about 1hour 20 mins away near Plymouth

SOSx 30-12-2013 12:50 AM

Hey great some interest:thumbsup:

Team 36 -good stuff. We've been thinking about coming along to Tiverton to try and meet a few more racers from around here. And with our track having track width of about 2.5m suits 1/10th and micros better than 1/8th. Do you're friends in N. Devon also race?

Hi Johnathon may - What do you drive? You a micro, 10th or 8th man?

rondoolaa 30-12-2013 02:08 AM

Loads of us race micro every week in Paignton in devon and 10th in Torquay in devon and race at Tiverton during the summer, Bideford is a long way to drive for us but track looks good, how long does racing last,

SOSx 30-12-2013 10:32 AM

Hi Rondoolaa,

What sort of micro no.'s do you manage to get down in Paington? I presume your the torbay micro racers club?

Racing normally lasts about 6 -7 hrs.
We normally run 5 min heats and 7 min finals.

Although with bradworthy hall we can have it all day for the same price if we want to.

SOSx 30-12-2013 10:38 AM

Its a real shame but It seems like we must be pretty much the only micro owners / racers in N.Devon?

jonathan may 30-12-2013 11:40 AM

we get between 15 and 20 on a Friday night at torquay

SOSx 30-12-2013 12:20 PM

Ah to have those sort of no.s

I don't know if either of you are involved with the running of it? But if you are, when you first started did advertise anywhere locally?

Team 36 30-12-2013 12:51 PM

G

I have two friends both rc races i will let them know about your club! They are both from North Devon

SOSx 30-12-2013 01:09 PM

Cheers Team 36. Where do the guys you know from N devon currently race Tiverton I presume?

Far from it tbh..there are many RC racers in the South West region as a whole, many running micro and 1/10th.

TBH...most racers just travel a lot!

Our club at Mendip RC Raceway (Weston-super-Mare) get anything from 20 to 60 racers at our outdoor club days, which run fortnightly on Sundays all year, and we get racers from Devon, Somerset, Avon, Wiltshire, S.Wales, Cornwall...and more!

WORM (also Weston) race micros indoors twice a month on Tuesday nights all year round and get people from a smaller radius as it's evenings.

Tiverton get even more than we do at Mendip through the summer...again, they draw racers from all over as well.

It could be a good idea to come out to the other clubs and meet everyone! We all share the same racers at the moment, so you'd see what's already going on club wise, the types of tracks and racing we do, and spread the word about yours

SOSx 30-12-2013 11:02 PM

Hi Blue_Pinky,

We've actually been watching your track progression with interest since you moved to the Mendip site and started with the astro track.
We have all talked about coming along to one of the Sundays.

Its a shame the tuesday evening micro racing is simply not do-able with work and family compitments as that is the class we all own and have all been running longest. Do you also race micro's on your astro or do you only run the 10th?

Although most of us have just been over to celebrate matt's Birthday and it seems we are all in agreement that we need to make the switch to 10th from 8th, infact Matt has just informed us that he has pre-ordered himself the new Durango as a bday present to himself ;). We all love our 8ths but both our track suits the 10th much better with 2.4-2.5m lane width and there are just so many more venues in the SW to go and race at in general. I'm really hoping the SW regionals will take off as that would be perfect for us.

I had assumed that there would be lot more rc owners/racers based in or close to N.Devon hiding in the woodwork but after asking on pretty much all the forums over the past couple of years i've found almost none. I'm actually starting to think we might actually be the only micro owners (or at least racers) in N.Devon, we did meet one but he has since moved to China with work:eh?:.

Team 36 - Do either of the guys you know in N.Devon own or race micro's or just 10th?

Team 36 30-12-2013 11:15 PM

They both race 1/10 off road at Tiverton they both keen to have a go at your club as they said it would cut the cost with traveling up to somerset!!

SOSx 30-12-2013 11:43 PM

Team 36 - If they're on oople you should point them in the direction of this thread? If not pursuade them to join oople then point them to the thread;)

As johnathan said we get between 15 and 20 racers on a Friday night in Paignton,
The clubs actually in Preston, half way between Paignton and torquay,
We are Torbay Micro Racing Club,
We race carisma gtb's, emb1's and losi mini 8ights and the odd lrp shark.
Vids can be seen in the YouTube link below

If you race for between 6 and 7 hrs it may be worth the visit, better than driving for 2hrs for 2hrs racing :-)

Dan Pickard 31-12-2013 10:17 AM

Apply to do a South west regional 1/10th even, it will be a good way to generate interest in the club from people further afield

SOSx 01-01-2014 10:15 PM

Hi sorry caught up in the new year mayhem.

Ron - Good stuff. We are actually going to look at another possibly bigger hall that we've been wanting check out for a while and hopefully will be racing there this weekend.

Dan - Were not at the point that we could consider something like that as to this point we haven't even been operating as a propper club as the no.s just haven't justified it. As such we are not (yet) currently registered with the BRCA as a club although we have been talking about it for a while and now we all need to renew our licenses it wouldn't cost much over and above our individual fees.

I think we would ideally want to build it up a bit more slowly allowing us to get used to running more organised events with more people with mutliple heats and classes. At the moment everything is being run quite informally ;)

We also have a lot of plans for this years astro track development that will bring it upto a more professional standard than it is currently. And for the indoor racing we are still looking for the ideal venue that is bigger and has good rostrum potential. But i feel that we are getting to the point that we sort of know whats going on and would really like to start having some more competative racing with more people.

tonydevon 10-01-2014 10:35 AM

cant beleive I just stumbled on post this by accident

I have been desperate to return to racing for some time, but having been told that tiverton had stopped racing, I now know different LOL, and my old club Mendip was slowly struggling, and not racing a class that interested me, yet again this has now changed

then I see that your racing in north devon :)

not only that but I live in Northam LOL

what sort of scale is Micro? 1/18th?

thats new to me, certainly smaller than my old 1/5th touring cars LOL

SOSx 10-01-2014 11:34 PM

Hi Tony,

Good stuff. Just replied to your pm but thought I should reply here as well.

The Micro's that are popular now are Losi Mini 8, Carisma GTB and LC racing EMB 1 and they
Are all classed as 1/14th scale.

We have been Racing 1/8th aswell the last couple of years but have decided to make a move to 10th
As both the size of our astro track suites them better and there are more other clubs in the SW running them
(Tiverton and Mendip being the main 2).

As I Said in my pm I'm away on holiday from tomorrow until the 28th but the other guys may go out and I'll let
Them know to contact you :-)

Look forward to meeting you when I get back from my holiday.

Cheers

Tim

Soon as i finished buying 1/10th off road bits i will buy a micro too

Update time

Hi all,

Anyway I've been back a few weeks now and plans have been getting made for a good years racing. We even got our first couple of racers from outside our direct friend group. Infact one of the halls we've been usings Chairman and son (about 60 and 30 years respectively).

I think we have decided upon the best indoor venue locally. We tried it briefly a while ago but didn't really make use of the space. This time we really could see the potential for it to grow into a proper club. The main part of the track we made here is about 21mx8.5m but the total track area including the little side area of around 190sqm but we think it could be made to be over 200sqm which is minimum national level track size (not that were thinking of nationals, just a good size track).
Track width was at least 2m and i think the selection of features and corners worked really well for clean yet intersting racing for all abilities.

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...pscb870890.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps1d95be6b.jpg

We can even make a decent height rostrum easily and that makes such a difference from the stages and even chairs we've been used to at other halls.
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps0b79e32d.jpg
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps01b985dc.jpg

This time we had the pit area next to the track, but next time we will use one of the many un-used rooms in the building. It has enough tables and chairs for around 300 people so pits shouldn't be an issue:thumbsup:.

For the first time we even took a printer to prin the results:blush:
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/g...ps17285c70.jpg

The venue location is:-
Langtree Parish Hall
Southlands Dr
Torrington, Devon EX38 8RH

Time from about 11am-6pm Most if not every Saturday.

Were thinking about running an open day of free racing at some point in the next 4-5 weeks to try and draw a some of the local (and hopefully not so local) racers out of the wood work to come and have a good day and give us some feedback on the track venue etc. this would be open to both micro racers and 10th off road. As we've all almost sorted our 10ths out as well now.

I'm going to try and get a club section on Oople (and ukmicrorc when its back up) and are going to really try and promote both micro and 10th racing locally both indoors and at the astro track, which incedentaly we have some big changes planned for this year;).
But more on that soon......
