b42 SD v2

hello

I've been waiting for the new kf to be release and I was getting bored of waiting so I though I would have a go at making one with my old b4 and my old b44.1 chassis. I bought a b44 off here from 'OHO' to use the rear end of the b44 and the front of my b4, so after a bit of work (about an hour) all I had to do was add rear end of the b44. Im currently using the rear end of my b44.1 to see how it will work, im still working on it and it is not finished yet so please don't make comments on bits missing.

now for the picture...
this was last night

sorry I don't have a before and after picture but this is the earliest one I took.

I tried this a couple of years ago, made a 25deg kick up out of alumunium and cut a b4 carbon battery strap to make a top deck. By making these parts myself i designed them so the original parts eg chassis would need no alteration (apart from b4 strap). I also made a brass weight to fit on the front drive output to balance the car when jumping think it was 40g. The car worked well on dry astro, but a bit loose in the wet. Also i found the bevel gears to be a problem....didn't seem to last. I will dig the parts out and post pics for you to see. Don't think i have a picture of my car with the conversion.

Very interesting!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Post any pictures, feedbacks from tests and info, please!
I also have an old B44 and a complete B4.1....

Thanks, I was giving it a test run to day in my living room and it felt great almost as good as my b44.1 avid

It should do I've just checked Tue weather and Sunday is the only nice day.

I know several who did this years ago. Try to google "B42". Think some GT2 parts were used to join them, there's a receipe somewhere... IIRC correctly a swedish guy was the inventor of this mod.

alex97 08-11-2013 10:41 PM

Thanks that's given me some good ideas for a front chassis brace.

Now that is really really nice!

I didn't get a chance to run the car today but I've got a few ideas for an undertray.

Rob,

Was it the #AS 3941 plstic gears you were stripping? Is this common with the standard 4wd version aswell or was it the brass counterweight adding the stress?

Radek

Thanks for the link.
I've finished cutting down the chassis so I should be running it soon, I still need to find a way to mount the shell.s

-use the original B44 undertray + velcro

-use the "side tabs" from the B44, mount a B4 front body mount on each of them (Pred style body mount)

alex97 01-12-2013 05:24 PM

I'm most likely am going to be the old undertray from my b44.1 as it don't use it any ore so the shell will just stick on to that. I'm thinking about upgrading the shocks to big bore but I DONT want to be spending silly money on a set of shocks so does any one know and good ones that won't bust thee bank

alex97 07-12-2013 04:54 PM

I will be testing it for the first time this weekend

mes 07-12-2013 08:54 PM

If you are still using the standard steering as it looks, I'd recommend getting some aluminum steering bellcranks, e.g. from avid rc, jconcepts, associated or team yaiba. When I mounted the avid (and later for better looks the team yaiba) steering in my sc10, the truck was transformed, and it got even better after I added the vision racing carbon steering rack. Great parts!

New pics pls!!!;)

alex97 08-12-2013 04:11 PM

after my first test today I know that I need to loosen off the diff and it does not run it in the wet very well. I will upload some more pictures tonight when I've put the motor and esc back in as I had to take the esc and motor out as my b44.1 motor unsoldered it self so I had to do a quick change over. I was using one of my b44.1 shells and it fits well, i also have a jc front wing to add. I think that it will work much better in the dry like all 2wd, I will give it another go in the new year with a few of the changes that I will have made to it.

alex97 14-04-2014 02:56 PM

long time since an update but nothing has changed until today. Seeing that since the last update 2 more chassis have been released that use the b4 front and b44 rear and seem to have been doing well I thought I might try this again.

In January I bought a alloy chassis for a b44 off of ebay for 99p, most likely because it was bright pink. The plan was just to paint over it but I striped the paint off and sanded it down so it has the brushed ally finish but I am thinking about getting it powered coated black.

All I have done so far is mounted the rear end and drilled the holes to mount the front. With this chassis I will be able to change the chassis length, im not sure what the difference will be between each hole for the chassis length.

Now for the picture, nothing else will change but I hope it will be ready to run so I can give it a go at Stotfold in two weeks time. I will update this when more happens.

Bit more done. The tires are not glued on so the tires so that's why the camber looks off.

SHY 14-04-2014 04:22 PM

Nice!

Hmmm... I have an unused B44 alu chassis...

learnerdriver 14-04-2014 04:58 PM

most current b42 turn the centre diff and motor mount through 180 degrees and put the front deck and associated front centre drive shaft on the rear

however that does mean that you also have to flip the rear diff internally to get the correct rotation

the above design does limit you to shorty lipos though

alex97 14-04-2014 07:35 PM

I wanted to keeped it the b44 layout for better balance and balanced weight over the drive wheels. I'm about to do my wing mod so that I use screws to keep the wing in place. I'll be using a b44.1 shell as I've got two spare. I'll keep this updated over the next few days.

alex97 14-04-2014 08:36 PM

sorry for the poor quality image but ive got the batterys in

alex97 15-04-2014 11:48 AM

Just added some electricts and had a play in the garden, I'm not sure if its the tires but it was very hard to find any grip at the front. I was using some new blue mini spikes and I'm not sure what the fronts are called as they came with the car (the ones in the picture). I think if I get some better tires that might improve it but I was only running on grass so it might be different when it comes to astro or carpet.

cutting42 15-04-2014 02:56 PM

Hi Alex

They are Cut Staggers and great for astro/carpet high grip. Not so good on low grip and grass, try some mini spikes. Blue is very hard I would use yellow for dry conditions silver for wet.

alex97 15-04-2014 03:09 PM

Thanks, I'm only testing so don't want to use my yellows. I've just put two packs though the car and after some front suspension changes it felt very alright but I had no grip roll and it was very hard to make the car spin out so I've got something right. The only thing I didn't like was it in the air, what ever I did it would still nose dive. I wasnt using a wing and the receiver was right at the front so maybe making a few changes there might help. The amount of kartwheels and front flips that I did showed how strong the car as it was fine after evey crash. I'll upload a picture later of it in its current state.

cutting42 15-04-2014 04:13 PM

You might need some weight between the batteries, I did!

Stiffen the front with blue springs and 35 wt oil and outer holes on lower shock mounts. Stand the rear shocks up using inner arm holes and soften the springs to green or black with a 25wt oil. Try disconnecting the anti roll bar as well.

alex97 15-04-2014 04:52 PM

It has the brass battery tray. I'll try the shocks later thanks

alex97 15-04-2014 06:38 PM

After another pack though the car and im very happy with it so far. So far I have only tested it on grass and other than the steering I don't have much more work to do on it.

I looked at doing something but useing a x factory x6 front end with associted as its one part and kicked up. That bolts on so no cutting a b4 up. And before any one says anything I know theres a x6s. I just wanted to use parts I already have laying about.

alex97 16-04-2014 03:25 PM

whats the difference between the b4 and x6? I have another chassis that will look better and better designed for the b42 sd, this is a while off as I want to test the current chassis first. The name change is to make it easier to say and for people to know what they are looking at. The SD part is for the saddle packs.

alex97 29-04-2014 06:26 PM

I wont be carrying on with this any longer as I just don't have the time and it does not suite the tracks that I race on. I will be selling the b4 front and b44 rear as a pair. they would be perfect for a x6s or a cobra chassis.
