Shock sizes

I have a set of XX4 shocks, what bits do i need to change? Just rear shafts and bodies?

Cheers

Big E 04-09-2008 07:13 PM

Yeah rear shafts and bodies.

0.9" bodies and either 0.9" or 1.0" shafts.

Cheers Ellis, 0.9 or 1.0's then? :p
Any limiters or anything?

YoungChazz 05-09-2008 05:09 AM

Is this for the X - 5 or 6?

If X - 5, then the xx4 shocks are exactly what you need.

If X - 6, the xx4 front ones are correct, but you need buggy rears, as Ellis says.

Big E 05-09-2008 06:34 AM

2mm if you have the 0.9" or 3mm for the 1.0"

B spacer on the outside to limit the up travel.

Lee 05-09-2008 07:01 AM

Ellis, why limit up travel, or is it just there to stop the driveshafts hitting the diff on full compression?

bigred5765 05-09-2008 08:58 AM

it help stops the gti effect lee

Lee 05-09-2008 09:26 AM

GTI ????

Chris Doughty 05-09-2008 09:31 AM

lifting the inside rear wheel like a golf GTi

Body Paint 05-09-2008 09:48 AM

so how does an external limiter on the rear shocks help stop the GTI then?

Lee 05-09-2008 10:09 AM

I`m wondering the same, i can see how it would stop lifting front wheels but not rears

Dunc 05-09-2008 11:13 AM

If you limit the compression on the loaded outside of the car (and so the roll), then I'm guessing that reduces any wheel lift induced on the unloaded inside?

I also thought the external limiters were primarily for preventing the driveshafts contacting the differential at full compression.

Chris Doughty 05-09-2008 11:24 AM

yes, but as they are pointing out.

the GTi effect comes from front left and right rear acting as a 'pivot' so that when the front right gets loaded up (gets compressed), it jacks up the left rear.

it works on diaganals.

I raced a xxx4, I know first hand and in depth about the GTi effect

Dunc 05-09-2008 11:33 AM

Ah. Sorry, I didn't realise the "GTi effect" worked diagonally across the car - I'm ignorant you see.

That's my point Chris, the front left loading up would cause the right rear to lift, so how the heck will limiting the up travel on the rear shocks effect things. It would stop the front inside wheel lifting, maybe, but I've never seen a 'GTI' do that

Less weight transfer?

Don't worry about it!!!!!!!!!!! Just do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mwhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

niggs98 05-09-2008 04:15 PM

always thought it was to stop the drive shaft hitting the out drive, didnt realise it had other reasons on the x6:wtf:

will tighten them another couple of turns then :wtf::wtf:

Blimey how many posts could there be about that one limiter!!!

And so you all know it is just to stop the driveshafts hitting the end of the diff cups. Although if you don't run the BK2 axles it is different anyway.

Lee 06-09-2008 06:33 AM

thanks for clearing that up ellis, I didn't think you would mess around with something as daft as car setup:woot:

sorry i was talking about the x5,

Talking shocks,,,,,

I am thinking of changing our B4, but losi shocks seem like hens teeth, I know I can run the associated shocks, is there an "equilivent" setup that I can follow.

Also would like to use Lipo's, if/when approved, seen threads talking of dremmeling away bits of strutting to fit them in, any chance of a modified chassis to suit a lipo stick/saddle pack, with more room for a brushless esc & fan in the middle? or am I being stupid.

Lee 07-10-2008 03:07 PM

You could put losi pistons in the AE shocks, they are the same size but provide less pack due to the shape and extra hole.

But the AE springs and the losi ones are not identical, but you can get somewhere near.:)

_sleigh_ 07-10-2008 03:29 PM

There are also a couple of base set-ups included with the X6 kit for both Losi and AE shocks.

Spencer Mulcahy 07-10-2008 04:15 PM

I have been looking into this this week and the nearest to Losi setup using associated stuff, this is going off Ellises Os setup. Size 2 pistons back and front they are the same hole size as Losi red pistons Blue springs up front and grey(ae) springs to the rear. The ae pistons have less holes than the Losi ones but I dont think that the differance is that noticable. I am going to purchase some Losi pistons for tje AE shock until I can get hold of some Losi ones.

JCJC 07-10-2008 04:42 PM

Thanks for the quick reply's guys, is is worth drilling an extra hole in the associated pistons ! this all now looks do-able untill some losi shocks come along.

Lee 07-10-2008 04:46 PM

I used ae shocks when i first got the X6, it was still very good but it felt better with losi reds all round 30wt rear and 35wt front. I also ran silver springs all round.

I would advise getting the losi shocks though as you can then copy what we all run and we can speak from experience rather than theory if you catch my drift.

You can drill an extra hole but the shape of the piston is also slightly different, the AE ones have a squared edge there the losi ones are rounded, the AE will provide more pack so will feel different going over bumps and landing of jumps.

JCJC 07-10-2008 05:23 PM

and pistons are cheep..........why would I do that, thanks Lee.
