Keen Hawk

I want one of these ...

I love the Tamiya names, I wonder if they just pick 2 random words from the dictionary and put them together.

Rob Fitzgerald 31-10-2006 09:55 AM

I am sorely tempted to get one of these and spend a small fortune upgrading it. I did this many years ago with a Manta Ray and had huge fun beating the odd 'proper' buggy with it.

jimmy 31-10-2006 10:17 AM

I think the shell should look great with a proper paint job on it. I am going to get one of these myself. they look fantastic with all the hop ups but yea, very expensive to buy them all!
I'll probably get the slipper and front one-way, the shocks might be a bit over my price range though.

I guess they cost a lot to upgrade too knowing Tamiya??

Looks pretty cool - reminds me of the old school Tamiya's we all had growing up, i haven't seen many new ones for years, i used to love it as a kid looking at the Tamiya catalogues at all the off road cars - Thunder Shot, Terra Scorcher, Manta Ray, Big-Wig, Hornet, Madcap, Boomerang, Frog, Avante etc.

As Chris said they really do choose the most random names but it works :D

DCM 31-10-2006 10:54 AM

B4 turnbuckles, DF02 CVD's on the front, couple of chassis mods, RW layshaft and a B4 slipper, DF03 shocks and it is a good 'un.

I am liking the shell a little more now.

Tamiya, please PLEASE just start naming your chassis with it's designation, like DF03 instead of these embarassing names, lol.

Rob, mine is on it's way to being hopped up, trying to work out which shinny blue bits to use at the moment, and waiting on the 3Racing chassis conversion for it too....

DCM 31-10-2006 11:07 AM

Rob, get yourself on www.3racing.com.hk option parts, tamiya, df03, they got a rendering of thir chassis conversion!!

jimmy 31-10-2006 11:35 AM

couldn't find the chassis pic on their site, but 3racing dont love me anyway.:)

DCM 31-10-2006 11:45 AM

heehee, I like a lot of their stuff...

jimmy 31-10-2006 11:54 AM

They were curtious enough to reply to me telling me to f'off, so thats always a plus point I guess. :p

jimmy 31-10-2006 11:57 AM

Steve, do you know if the tamiya slipper will work with the B4 pads and spur ? same internal diameter ??
I just dont fancy buying metric pinions.

BenG 31-10-2006 12:18 PM

i think steve had a layshaft made up by RW racing;)

jimmy 31-10-2006 12:23 PM

yeah, there's always that one I guess. Its just that he doesn't list it and its a bit of an email jobbie. Easier to put something on the review car that I can tell people where to get it really

BenG 31-10-2006 12:33 PM

try MSNing Steve;)

DCM 31-10-2006 12:56 PM

I don't think it will Jim, it is the typical imperial and metric thing that gets in the way. Just shoot an email to RW Racing for a layshaft and then chuck a B4 unit on there.

jimmy 31-10-2006 05:16 PM

Seen the chassis now, their stuff looks alright, I will probably get official Tamiya stuff if I buy anything though. But I tested my luck by emailing them - again. I love to get shot down.;)

DCM 31-10-2006 06:35 PM

I tried, and I got shot down, so buy the stuff direct from Asia, so still ubber cheap.

Rob Fitzgerald 31-10-2006 06:40 PM

DCM

Is the car out already ?

Do you know where I can get one and pay using PayPal ?

DCM 31-10-2006 06:55 PM

that actual shell model isn't out yet, you can get a Dark Impact and then get the shell.

That car itself drives quite nicely, I got a set of steel outdrives coming for the rear, as the rear diff is a tad fiddly, made a set of carbon towers for it, got the DF-03 shocks (they are like the TRF shocks for the tourers)

jimmy 31-10-2006 07:22 PM

Early december I think its first released Rob. Thats what I was told.

I quite like getting shot down steve, makes me try harder. I hope tamiya will release a hopped up version of this car, its a promising platform.

DCM 31-10-2006 08:28 PM

If they do, they got to sort out the rear suspension, and the way it is mounted, I am hoping 3Racing will allow room for the Saloon suspension mounts, that will give you rear toe and anti-squat adjustment.

I am going to fit the one-way in mine and give it a blast at club in two weeks.

jimmy 31-10-2006 08:57 PM

3rdacing or tamiya one way ? centre of diff ?

I want the diff one way, its the only way to go (pun wholly intended)

DCM 31-10-2006 10:02 PM

I got the centre Tamiya one-way, will run a front one-way outdoors, not indoors though.

Wooo found the pic of the 3 racing design...it looks pretty good i think. Wish i had more money

jimmy 03-11-2006 06:58 PM

3' was a let down as expected but there seems to be a load of manufacturers doing the same stuff for this DF-03 chassis. Tamiya, 3racing, square, kmc, yeah racing. are the ones I found so far.

I know you don't like it steve, but I just saw the latest version of the KM Concept conversion and I think it looks rather nice. Ok, the cell layout concept of the car has been ignored totally, but I still like it.
http://www.km-rc.com/oscommerce/cata...es/DIK-100.jpg
how many stickers on that wing ?

DCM 03-11-2006 07:10 PM

I am going off both, 3Racing refuse to add a few more mm's of carbon fibre at the rear to give you the option of running suspension blocks... grrrr

I do like the 3Racing stuff, works out nice and cheap.

jimmy 03-11-2006 07:50 PM

yea it is cheap for sure, never had any so I cant comment on quality. Shame they don't listen - saw your post in their forum, I guess they aren't interested! would be nice to have proper mounts on - not sure how it would work with the gearbox but hey

DCM 03-11-2006 07:59 PM

just dremmel the lugs off shoud be fine, take the stress off the gearbox...

Rob Fitzgerald 04-11-2006 09:32 AM

I have ordered my Dark Impact and one of the RW layshafts.

I will give it a race and see what I think before I throw any more money at it though.

What wheels fit (and stay legal width) ?

jimmy 04-11-2006 01:36 PM

Where'd you get the RW layshaft rob ? I tried to get on the website and couldn't

edit: must have just been down, works now.

DCM 04-11-2006 03:00 PM

Rob, if yo ucan, chuck a set of DF-02 Tamiya front CVD's on it, otherwise, in race trim, the thing will shear the dogbones (they pop out and then bend/snap)

DF03 wheels fit, you can get the older 'star' type Tamiya wheels to fit, but it needs a little dremmel work at the rear to stop the wishbones snagging the webbing of the wheel.

jimmy 04-11-2006 05:30 PM

what is DF02 ? gravel hound ? are they the same size ?

DCM 04-11-2006 05:52 PM

DF-02 is a Gravel Hound, but don't be tempted to buy the cheap ones for the DF-02, as the Tamiya ones require different diff-outdrives on the DF-02 but are a direct fit on the DF-03.

Also, 3Racing do them now, I might give mine a blast next weekend in practice at my local club.

dan_kitty 06-11-2006 09:26 AM

Hi steve im in need of new rear outdrives for mine, what ones would you recomend? also last time you saw mine going around the track you recomended a different shock setup but I cant remember what u said, if you recall the backend was bouncing up and down like a pogo stick. Hopefully will get mine running again soon but i have appeared to have lost a screw, the one that goes underneath the front c-hub which holds the steering knuckle inplace, any ideas where i can get one easily?

cheers in advance

dan

Rob Fitzgerald 06-11-2006 09:34 AM

I have scoured ebay for some genuine Tamiya driveshafts with no luck. Any ideas anyone ?

jimmy 06-11-2006 10:03 AM

Whats up with the rear outdrives ? is there a problem there steve ?

dan_kitty 06-11-2006 10:30 AM

mine have just worn away from the dogbones rattling about, need some proper drivshifts for them i think.

DCM 06-11-2006 11:04 AM

fusion hobbies (www.fusionhobbies.com) will have genuine DF02 CVD's, the 3Racing ones would be ok for the rear, but the Tamiya ones are far tougher.

Outdrives, the rear ones are an odd setup, plastic holder for the diff-ring, steel outdrive. The wear is caused by the fact that there is waaaaaaaaaay too much droop, I am looking at between 5+10mm inner spacer for indoor racing. I can't find Tamiya outdrives at the moment, I got a set of fronts coming to go on the rear (they should fit) then you are welcome to my spare ones.

3Racing got some rear outdrives on their site, just not released as yet.

Rob Fitzgerald 06-11-2006 11:54 AM

Fusion are showing no stock :(

DCM 06-11-2006 01:14 PM

email or give them a bell Rob, they can check on Hobby Co stock levels and have them to you pretty quick if Hobby Co do have them, if they don't, you might have to go to stellamodels or dinball and do a rush shipment for the weekend.
