Ok, I built it !...paint job ?
Finding a stack of old RCMC magazines from the 80's woke me back up to a long lost hobby and a much loved interest.
So due in no small part to your great website Jimmy, a ZX5 build was the only way to scratch my itch ! Im struggling to come up with a good body paint scheme though, I would love a replica of the box art but without an airbrush or the required skill its a no go. Anbody any ideas for a good can based paint scheme ? Cheers. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...than808/b5.jpg |
I'm no expert on bodyshell painting - what I would say though is that if all you have are cans, a single colour or something very simple (racing stripes of some sort) can look really nice on the ZX-5, it's such an elegant, slim body. I run all my cars in single colour yellow and it actually looks more individual than the multi-colour cars that most people have now.
And I would also get some velcro for the shell and not bother cutting the holes for the body posts. They are a right pain to use. Also cut the shell a few mm below the bottom cut line to start with because there is not much room for the wiring and some larger electronics. |

VERY good tip! mine won't stay on because of the tight fit! |
Red an yellow fit the Lazer very well.
Dark colors dont llok as good as bright ones. |
Thanks for the useful tips.
I will post up the result once its done. |
You could always go with the classic one color, "factory" white. :p

Ok, I painted the body. I went with the promo photos as the inspiration. Im quite pleased with the results.
Looking forward to installing the electrics now. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...than808/b6.jpg |
Looks nice, I didnt have an airbrush going at the time I did the ZX-5 review, but when it came to doing the KM Concept zx5 conversion review, I did another simple paint job, I think that looks best on this car. Like sosidge says, its a nice shell to begin with and quite a classic shape.

Looks good mate I have gone down the simple paint route, how about edging the windows with crome will finish it off a treat.

I like a little more colors and airbrush paintjobs, but is not easy to make... :(
Like my own bodyshell |
oooh, like that!

Yes, nice to see sharp, geometric edges instead of the various faded flames or splashes everyone else uses.

Thanks for the comments.
Spencer, good idea, I think I will have a go at edging the windows to add a little more detail. Oh and thanks for putting a picture of yours Ulrich, it looks great. |

Sorry to drag this thread back from the depths but I am in need of ideas/inspiration for the paint job of the ZX-5 as it nears completion. I would love to see what schemes people have chosen for their cars, or even just images of other peoples off the web. Come on, let's all have a look!

Oops picture not coming out

Looking good. Love the nice simple design. I am looking at something similar myself as I will be using cans rather than airbrush.
Anyone done any dark colours? I was toying with the idea of black and white but not sure whether the Kyosho shell will look as good as it does with brighter shades. |

Here's a pic (hopefully), but it looks better in daylight (and I'm no photographer!). And be nice, this is the first shell that hasn't been single colour from a single spraycan ;););) http://j-star.org/images/zx5_small.JPG |
I like cheese.
