The RHR unofficial flying club
Reading Mikes post gave me an idea...
Lets all get together and crash into each other! How does RHR next wed (24th July) sound? |
All going well i will be there!
|
If I can juggle work, I will. Got a funeral the day after, so not much free time next week.
|
I'm UBEC'd up, tested, dindango repaired and ready to go! I'll be leaving York around 5:00
|
Was a pretty cool inaugural meet of the RHR unofficial flying club!
Mike (northernmonkey) - DJI 550 HAL - impressive altitude! James - DJI 550 HAL - extremely impressive FPV and gimbal Bloke (?) Blade 130 CP - CP skills better than mine Me - SK450 kk2 - pretty fast and agile. My 808 was playing up a bit, and kept shutting down mid video, so my footage is limited but I think Mike may have got some good stuff. I'll upload what's any good to youtube and post in the vid thread |

Gutted I had to leave so soon!
Col, what motors you got on you 450? Thinking I may build a similar rig to practice rolls etc... |
Vids looked good Col - ill try and make the next one :)
|
They're these: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=12921
Nothing special about them, TBH, but they do provide good power. My sunnysky 980kv arrived today so I'm in the middle of fitting those. As I don't seem to suffer from excessive vibration (due to a bit of flex in the arms?) I'll be interested to see what difference they make - as I said last night changing the esc's from std turnigy ones to the afro's has made it easier to fly, but much less aggressive so I might look into 4cell and 8" props. Or build another more aggressive quad/tri with all my spares! |

1 fitted, 1 nearly fitted, 2 still boxed so I'll have to let you know tomorrow on that one!
|
SunnySky's are on and a few tests have been completed.
Smoother than the turnigy's? Yes Much smoother? No Different flight characteristics? No, seem very similar Worth the extra cash? We'll see... They are definitely quieter, though. |
Interesting re the motors - is the flight time the same?
I've ordered a 4s lipo (same capacity as my 3s) to compare flight times - my understanding is that it should fly a little longer on 4s ? |
Which Sunnyskys have you got Col?

Remember - threadlock is the future...
|
Thread lock everything !!!!
I forgot to do one motor, and it started to come away from the frame - luckily I saw it as it took off and I narrowly avoided a nasty crash. I've got the bigger Sunnysky's on my 450 now 2216 - 1100KV. Flight time has reduced to around 8 or 9 mins on 3S 2650 lipo, but it shifts carrying the servo gimbal, landing gear and go pro2. I ordered another 2212 - 980 so I have 6 of them in total to go on the 550 when it arrives. The 2212's were ok with the 450 with all the extra load, but I fancied a bit more poke! |
RHR unofficial flying club - I won't be able to make this wed (7th Aug) but am looking good for the 14th if anyone fancy's a play?
|
Sherbs=1400kv ;)
14th could be good for me:thumbsup: |
Wed 14th!
Hows the weather looking? Forecast for York is very promising |
What time and where do you guys meetup. I might be available to nip up, would be good to see the different flying characteristics between the nazas and thr kk2.
Eek I can see where this goes and the fllowing puchases made. ..., a nice 330 as they seem fun, a 450 for slightly more stability and a 550 as the filming rig. All with a mixture of naza and kk2. Hmm maybe shouldnt make it ha ha. |
I'm away on holiday this week - so can't make it again :(
Hopefully get to another meet up - would love to see the other machines. |

I leave York around 5, so get there about 6 but if you're just coming for the flying then as long as you're there before dark then that's fine - I'm not sure I'll be running my buggy this week |
That's the one Col, mine haven't arrived yet. I've ordered the 1400kv ones. I cant give a solid argument why, will have to wait to see if they're too powerful. What diameter is the prop shaft please?
|
5mm I think?
I'm using the adapters that came with my props: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dProduct=25820 with no problems |
Just a courtesy reply to say I cant make it tonight. Ill deffo make it another time time though.
Have fun guys. Col. |

Was just me and my little quad all on my own. Here it is, just after it tried to assassinate James: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps6e5b8f5b.jpg |
Apologies, intended to go but work cropped up and it seemed a tad windy?
What happened Col? (Other than you crashing it!) |
Sorry busy working this week after 3 weeks off.
|
Ooops Col !
How did it happen? How's it flying now with the Afros and Sunnysky's? |
Well.......
It was all James's fault... I thought I'd try the new firmware (1.6++) with high stick scaling to see if it would flip. It did - first flip was easy and very cool! Problem was that I didn't quite know what I did to make it so successful. Attempt no2 was nearly very cool! I think it did 3 (maybe 2) flips and hit the ground - no damage. Still not sure what I was doing first time... Attempt no3 was not so cool. 1/2 flip and inverted crash into the ground - 3 props broken and some of the pins on the kk2 bent. The damage in the photo... TBH I've no idea what went wrong. James had a fly (without problems) and I was doing simple turns (with self level on and no mixing) when I realized that it was about to kill James! I killed power and we ran! It crashed about 1 foot short of where James was standing and continued to hit him on the leg. The damage was done as it hit the ground. I don't think it was inverted at all, but all the pins on the kk2 have taken alot of pain and will need some work to make right, other than that it's just an arm. Thankfully James was unhurt. I can only assume that my brain capacity isn't big enough to talk and fly at the same time... |
Hi Col
Sounds like fun !! I just watched a video on flitetest about stick scaling and flips. http://www.flitetest.com/articles/kk2-stick-scaling The guy on there said, never, ever, ever try flips with auto level on as the KK2 can get confused and cause you to crash ? Maybe I was lucky when I tried it - watch the vid and see what you think. Hope you get it sorted :) |

Col.
What is 'mixing' ? |
Installed 1.6++
Can see why you crashed the Quad now Col.... |
Quote:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1899326 It is essentially full acro, but with self level on when the sticks are centered... It will quite happily travel a full 90* from horizontal! |
Tried 1.6++
Not sure about it at all - very hard to fly ! Just simply flying around was a nightmare - quad wanted to go sideways and into the ground. Is this how the top lads fly these things !!? Col - did you change stick scaling settings - I had to back off to around 20 otherwise it was far too sensitive. Managed a few flips - one bent prop, got scared and switched the mixing off. It was mad though - looked a bit more like the crazy stuff you see on YouTube with the quad right over on its side, might persevere.... |
Left all settings as they were originally
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps0bc48888.jpg but have since moved up to around 40 on elv and ail. It was flipping with scaling at 80 at RHR - seemed possible to do 2 flips per second at that! It'll still flip at 40, but slower, and not too twitchy when flying normally. |
Is anyone going to make it tomorrow? if so i'll get my gear ready for the morning, and stick it in the car for after work.
|
Not me I'm afraid. Or the week after
