is 10th off-road the 'fastest' electric class?
as the title says, could it be that 10th off-road is the fastest electric class?
think of all electric classes, if speed or runtime was not an issue, all you had to do was stick to the class rules which class would be the fastest? |
From what I have seen 12th scale on road is faster!
|
sorry, my mistake, I meant potentially the fastest class...
legally, I could drop a 3.0T brushless motor with 6 VTEC4600 cells - we do have less efficient transmission maybe, but what else would get close to that? |
When you say fastest Chris how do you mean?
Surely a 1/10th scale on road car is quicker if you mean in a straight line or on a flat track, but i do feel that there is more skill required to drive an off road car  EDIT: you posted whilst i was |
I mean if everyone was to turn up at a drag race track and go for top speed, which class would end up quickest - each class would have to stick to their own rules.
|
Well being a sad ba****d i know that a touring car bodyshell does nothing above 12mph but cause drag because it starts to deform. so i think they will get to a point and hit a brick wall. so i think if we all turned up and geared the cars to the moon etc and went for it the 12th scale and tourers would leave us standing off the line but once our bigger wheels and tyres came into play we might have a chance especially with the advantage of balloonage
|
Id say 12th scale would win the drag race.
They weigh about as much as my farts...slap a 2 or 3 brushless motor in (Dont Nosram do a 2.5 nowadays?) and itll zoom off like a rat on crack. 10th offroad would have too much drag with the mahoosive wings. 10th TC still sticks to high weight limits even with LiPo. 12th gets my vote. |

He did also have his car powered by the National Grid lol
If you were to do this drag race on flat tarmac then the 12th would kill all. Ive never heard of a 'drag' race going over a mixed surface. |
12th scale - limited for 4 cells
TC - limited to 5 cells would our extra cells overcome the drivetrain? we would obviously cut the 'racing' gurney flap off the back. |
I really think we could have a chance, the only issue we have is, could we make up the distance lost at the beginning of the race, we have an extra cell and i dont think the drive train is much of an issue its the extra 400 grams we have to lug around :(
|
10th scale Pan Car. It's making a comeback. With LiPo 2S power!
|
was going to say, 10th scale pan car chassis like an RC10L, as long as you can get the power down, it will out rip anything in a straight line, plus the shells are far more efficient at passing the air over.

and as there are not currently any rules - they are exempt. I'm not trying to find out what chassis would be best for an insane speed run. the question I guess I am actually asking is what electric classes rules allow you to make your car the fastest? just out of interest really... and no, I don't have a 3.0T to run at stotfold... |
i honestly think 1/12th pan car would win... but i reckon a pred, being low to the ground and very good aerodynamically could put up a good fight?

what is the weight limit for a 12th scale?
what are the weight limits for off-road? 2 and 4WD |

12th scale is 800 grams |

we have 1/3rd more 'power' (waits for clarkson) than they do, yet their aero package is much better than ours... tough one to call.... |
If the German PRO10 rules are anything to go by, definitely 10th pan cars. They run 5300mAh 2S lipos and no motor limit, so it's 2.5 and 3 turn brushless motors they are using.
They have to be carefull not to dump the lipo before race time is up and are currently lapping around the same speed as 1/8th scale onroad cars on open tracks. :wtf: I think if you geared the hell out of it and ran it in a straight line anything else would have a bloody hard time catching up... |
Depends on soooo many factors, surface type (drag races generally on flat tarmac sure but is it dusty, wet, dry, cracked etc?) Would 10th offroad be running control tyres or open choice? i.e spikes or 'slicks', how long is the course, which way is the wind blowing? :p
Also can't 10th off road run touring/rally body shells? I can't remember for sure but I think I read something about that in the rule book, don't think I have mine to hand. That would help even the aero side of things out. But one thing is for sure, I think 10th off road is the only class where we can actually go overboard on the power, for everything else it's as much as possible really. I also seem to recall 2 speed gearboxes being allowed in a couple of classes, about 95% sure it's allowed in nitro on road classes, I *think* 8th off road can use them but not 100% on that... more than one speed transmission would be a major advantage. |
Thought
Here's a thought
Shot in the dark ! Maybee just maybeee ! The fastest electric car in a drag race would beeeeeeeee !!!!!!! A DRAG CAR ! :o:o:o:o Lipo brushless big back tyres ! Built for it ?????? |
i say 12th
i think a 4wd 1/10th would come close but the 12th would win every time |
no drag racing class on the BRCA tho afaik? :eh?:
|
OK, so we eleminate the specialist classess,
IFMAR classes only |
STILL 12TH
|
Why dont we test it out? Im sure someone would lend you a 3.5 chris:thumbsup:
|
sure lrp could sent him one
|
you would proper have to belt some Proline tires though, they would get seriously massive!
|

Toss-up between 1/12 and buggy. Only one way to find out for sure..... |

|
Well, i'm told that from a recent test, some touring car guys were hitting 58mph in full race trim...............
|
I think it would have to be a covered-wheel class.
Our big, open, spiky tyres (and exposed suspension) would add a lot of aero drag - although if the rules would allow you to fit snoring car wheels and tyres... |
What about 1:8 electric conversions? I know that only Roar has some rules now, but maybe them or 1:12.
|
Well if you were to put a 2.5 brushless in a 1/12th scale and geared it as high as physically possible. Then in a straight line it would be almost un-matched.
|
I was at a BRCA event last year, the people like andy moore, olly jefferies where hitting 63mph as the cub had a speed gun there.
:) |

The only thing that would change surely would be gearing if it was a long enough course, it's not like they would drop motor winds or do anything for more power, they're already doing it ! |
straight line drag with any motor and current cell rules would have to be a buggy. 2.5 proline/losi tyres and massive gearing, yes we would get killed off the line but in overall top speed i think we would do it, most of the other guys are already on a 3.5 or lower to be competetive as it is, think the buggys would romp through towards the end. if it was an out and out no rules drag race in ideal conditions with any cells then either a 12th or 10th pan car would anialate anything in its path, years ago we had a pro10 with 12 cells on the motorway clocked at about 80 and that only had a 13 double in it
|
So when are you gonna hold the drag race test Chris?
