A1GP is a single car team, so no problem with teammates dropping out and letting you down. Cars are identicle so it is down to pure driver ability! Get signed up now.

This might be a bad idea for someone of my years. I've joined but WTF happens now?? When does practice happen?? Do I need to go and set the car up now??

read the quick start guides, and the other detailed guides. they are pretty good
the game will start when we have enough people, hopefully in 24 hours or so.

day 1, practice and qualify
day 2 practice and race
day 3 practice and feature race
day quali again

So can each player run practice etc. at any point during the allocated day??

yes. basically the practice is for 24hrs for everyone to log in and do there test laps to get a set up and choose their strategies for pace, pitstop etc. once the 24hrs are up the server "calculates" the outcome based on your driver characteristics, strategy and how well set up the car is. The next 24hr period is then started.

that's where your strategy comes in! it's easy really.

9th was ok considering i only got 2 laps in first practice due to a crash. second practice was ok, practically 100%, so i'm gunning for that podium!!
