New starter

Hello everyone, how we doing? Im just making the switch from 1/10th electric touring cars to 2wd buggys. Just wondering which brushless motors you guys yous? I will be racing at the Bury club hopefully after March do you guys run a certain motor class or is it which ever you can handle... lol
Thanks for any help guys!

Si Coe 13-03-2013 06:24 AM

Whatever you can handle but for a 2wd I wouldn't advise going beyond a 7.5t, maybe less. Some people run more powerful motors than that but our track isn't that big so its not required.

Chris Elworthy 13-03-2013 07:19 AM

The speed and power of the cars these days is massively effected by the batteries. As Si said I wouldn't suggest anything higher than a 7.5 in 2wd or even an 8.5 if you have Lipo's with a high "C" rating.

Hahahahaha very funny guys! ive gone for the Orion Vector R10 Pro esc but still cant decide on which model motor to go for obviously need something BRCA legal! :bored:

Si Coe 14-03-2013 06:19 AM

Well you don't really because nobody checks, but there is no clear best choice. What to go for depends on your driving style more than anything else.

Gavin Collingwood 14-03-2013 07:53 AM

Very good choice of speedo they're fantastic. Just beware have the punch setting on number 1 not 8 or 9 like you'd have on TC, the HPI flux motors are brilliant especially given the price. Pound for pound the best. Obviously the Orion or Any of the top motors will be good too but they're £90+. To be honest the motor will only be as good as your speedo powering it and you've basically bought one of the best speedos out there so you're golden

coleman758 14-03-2013 08:30 AM

I run the R10, 3 of them actually!

They are really nice! I have a VST Orion motor but not tried that yet.
The LRP X12 or TEKIN Redline are my fav 2

Chris Elworthy 14-03-2013 08:32 AM

I have to agree with Gav for once here and suggest the HPI flux range. I too run an R10 speedo and to be honest in a 2wd gaining the necessary power isn't the issue its regulating it so spending £90+ on a motor really isn't necessary.
I run Thunder Power motors which are equally as good as the flu x's and a similar price but far more places stock the HPI motors.

What car have you bought?

Last minute I decided to go for the speedpassion 2.0 pro was bit cheaper that swung me and ive gone for a thunder tiger 8.5 motor! Not bad for under 200!

Ive bought the cougar sv2 should arrive tomorrow hopefully just need batteries and im away!!

Gavin Collingwood 14-03-2013 10:20 AM

Yeah the R10 has possibly the smoothest power delivery of all speedos which is crucial in 2wd. The sv2.....? Hmmmm...

Si Coe 14-03-2013 06:12 PM

If you've gone for a Speed Passion 2.0 its not a bad choice either. The R10 is in fact what would have been the Speed Passion 3.0 (both are based on Hobbywing Xerun platforms) so its like you've got the slightly older model. Still a very smooth esc, as smooth as the R10 in fact just without the mega power boost features you don't want in a 2wd anyway.

That and a Thunder power 8.5t is a pretty good combination - more than enough power and buttery smooth.

Of course I'm running a GM Genius 120 in full TC spec with all the boosts on max and a poor little Orion 10.5t revving its heart out so in a way its all academic......

Gavin Collingwood 14-03-2013 10:26 PM

If you're used to TC speeds. Get a 7.5 you'll be fine

damo_hall 14-03-2013 10:40 PM

ey whats wrong with the SV2?

damo_hall 14-03-2013 10:42 PM

another thing im stuck on is batteries! does the SV2 only take the saddle packs?

Gavin Collingwood 14-03-2013 10:58 PM

It just takes around £50 worth of optional parts to get going fast and it's super brittle. You'll find almost all 2wd buggies need saddle. Get saddle and you'll be sorted

damo_hall 14-03-2013 11:16 PM

oops looks like i made a bad choice there then! which optional parts does it need then?

Si Coe 15-03-2013 12:09 AM

The 210 doesn't need a saddle. It can take full length sticks in both rear and mid motor. Admittedly most of us use saddles in them, we just don't need to.....

Gavin Collingwood 15-03-2013 07:18 AM

This is quoted from another thread from my mate Chris who runs an sv2

"the kit setup for the sv2 is way off for astro and I found it very pointy and inconsistent. My car is now feeling much more like it but you will need to spend around £40-50 quid to get the car feeling predictable. I will list the parts you need below then you can start fitting them before we get into the setup side.

Most important is the carbon link mount option set, part no U3998. This is a set of 5 different plates in different lengths for tuning with your camber links. You may stick with the same one from the set but unfortunately they only sell these as part of the £18 set.
- also get hold of some 5degree yokes as these will calm the front end down.
- the standard pistons are also no good so get hold of the 3 hole pistons for front and rear.
- your gonna need to get a set of extra long ball studs also, these come in a pack of 4. I will explain later what these are for.
- finally when using the wider front camber plates I mentioned earlier the standard front turnbuckles are too long so you will need shorter ones. I got the 3mm 1 7/8" titanium turnbuckles fromDMS racing which do the trick but to be honest any 3mm turnbuckle between 45-50mm should do the job.

These items are necessary before you can really start dialling the car in. I hated mine after the first few outings but after a bit of modding its probably the best handling 2wd I've driven.

Chris"
