Kyosho Turbo Optima gold celebration repro..FINISHED

Love the gold celebration turbo optima.

So I wanted one and cheated a little in the process

Started off with this good substrate that I nabbed on eBay

Yeah...I know...those wheels!!

I was fortunate to get a belt drive conversion!

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...psc46f2682.jpg

Front end in good nick...just some old dirt!

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps07b0d5a5.jpg

Here are most of the alloy components after the tear down. Scratches in most.

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps170d88ec.jpg

Here are the same parts after a little anodising.

Starting the rebuild!

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...pse02aebe9.jpg

Rear end done!

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps370f0246.jpg

Most Chassis also completed!!

This it where building stops for a while but stay tuned for more!! I need some essential missing parts including the long steering post and the steering spacer plate.

optiman 07-03-2013 01:03 AM

Oooohhhhh!!!! Did you did it yourself????
Niiiicccceeee work!!!!

ralphee 07-03-2013 03:54 AM

Thats a blinding idea Naushad, looks ace too!
What steering post bud, might have one, ill check, is it the lower, or upper steering brace you need?

Small update guys...

Been sidetracked by work and the cold really affect my hands!!

Took me time to get the following parts

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...psb63463bd.jpg

Front end now is almost complete.

Oh my... I'm blown away by the result! Looks superb :wub

I wish I had the knowledge or the connections doing stuff like this. Correct me if I'm wrong but the bottom plate was never part of the original gold celebration kit right? Was it ever sold separately? If not, your build will be unique just with that detail.

Following this with big interest.

....

Naushad 25-03-2013 01:30 PM

That's a good question. I tend to think not, the reason being is that this spacer plate came in a set that included servo plates/spacer. I don't think these latter items were part of the gold celebration kit. However I may be wrong too!

I'm glad you like it. I'll be adding a few other unique touches so it won't be an exact replica but I think one worth staring at!

Thank's

The underguard wasn't seen until the Turbo Optima, it was never available in the gold finish. But it does look great.

The plate under the servo saver/steering arms was part of the celebration kit though. These are all the parts that were included:

Nice work there Naushad correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like your front lower guard is bent where the bumper screws to.

I was kinda thinking of doing something like this myself.

Keith ;)

Naushad 26-03-2013 08:35 AM

Hi Keith,

Hmm..I will need to check this carefully as the build progresses. If it is bent significantly I'll have to correct it.

No I did look into doing this myself but it seemed too much hassle so I sent it to someone in the UK who did the job for an excellent price which included stripping, anodizing and polishing.

The chaps name is Adam of absmetals. Nice guy!

I went through the same process with my Optima a few years back. Looks good but the real Option House gold is clearer.

Naushad 26-03-2013 09:24 AM

I know Gayo. I saw your repro a long time ago posted on oople.

You are right. "Kyosho gold" is somewhat lighter but my repro is not far off!

j0pp3 26-03-2013 09:43 AM

It look like something between gold an copper but I still love it. Thanks for outing the source of production

What a nice piece of vintage!

What happened to the motor guard?

ozipanda 30-03-2013 10:42 AM

This is how I got it, I am assuming this is how it came as everything was in the box including the original purchase receipt from 1988, decals and manual. The steering servo was attached to the chassis with Blu-tack,:o which would probably explain why the car has hardly been used and was about to be thrown away! I plan to rebuild it as there are missing screws and some binding in the transmission.

TARTMAN 30-03-2013 11:20 AM

options

I think, it may have been an optional extra to buy, the rear motor guard.

Was a few models that had these as optional items.

There's no mention of it in the assembly steps in the manual so I guess it must have been an option part.

The motor guard didn't come with any kit. It wasn't in the Gold Optima, Turbo Optima or Salute. It was only available as an Option House part so 'correct' restorations shouldn't really include it.

The under chassis guard did come with the Turbo Optima and the Salute.

keithrc 30-03-2013 12:51 PM

The motor guard is an optional part from Option House, they and the gold side nerf bars never came as standard parts in any of the Optima kits.

Ozipanda, I noticed the two screws on the cross brace on the upper chain cover, they belong at the rear of the radio plate for the driver doll to fit under.

Thanks Keith, I am going fully disassemble and rebuild before it before I attempt to run it.

Another little update...managed to get some building done! I think it's coming together nicely. Need to press on with the electrics install.

Well done Naushad! Coming together nicely. I just have to try this some day :)

percymon 02-04-2013 08:25 AM

Looking great Naushad - hopefully i'll get me shocks back from the anodizers this week :D

Naushad 07-04-2013 06:07 PM

This project has finally come to completion and I'm very happy with the end result!

These wheels were bought ages ago from gomachv (Jeff). By a company called Condor racing.

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8fd940f3.jpg

When put together they look the business..I haven't glued the rims to the wheels

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4929aba3.jpg

Tidied the wiring a little. A few little things to still do here, but I can tackle them someother time.

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps419896c8.jpg

Shell cut, decals applied and ready for mounting.

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5b78d41a.jpg

The end result...I think a fitting tribute to my 1000th post :)

Props mate, she's stunning,.. And suitably old school looking.

percymon 07-04-2013 09:10 PM

Fantastic result Naushad - and a great way to hit 1000 posts !

gomachv 08-04-2013 12:27 AM

Those wheels look great on there! Job well done!

kek23k 08-04-2013 12:53 AM

That looks awesome and the gold works really well with the red. I've really enjoyed the build and I think you should pat yourself on the back for a job well done :D

DanB4 08-04-2013 03:32 AM

Well done mate and happy 1000th!

Is that an optima pro top deck?

gomachv 08-04-2013 05:16 AM

Hope you still haven't glued the tires...hint...right rear:D

Naushad 08-04-2013 06:26 AM

No Jeff...all tyres have been left unglued.

Naushad 08-04-2013 06:27 AM

Not sure Dan...it's the top deck that came with the roller I bought. What makes you suspect it's from an optima pro?

Wow.... nice work!!!
BRAVO!!!! (in standing ovation)

Well, I sourced a local company who does the gold anodizing, now I need to decide whether I anodize my original Optima, the Javelin or the Turbo Optima(dont have yet) I plan to get on near future.

One question; Was the celebration chassis only factory available to the original Optima and not on the Turbo Optima nor Javelin?

The reason I ask is because I've never seen a box of a Turbo Optima nor the Javelin with the gold celebration chassis option.

And another question, which I've tried several times to get answered; when was the true release date of the Turbo Optima Mid Special?

Again, great job!

Naushad 08-04-2013 03:04 PM

Thanks!

Toms may have been '88 or '89

I think the gold celebration chassis was found on the original optima as part of a kit. It was also available separately. So I'm guessing people just installed it o their turbo optimas etc..

Naushad 08-04-2013 03:05 PM

Thanks, but most satisfying of all was an appreciation from the wife! :woot:
