2 gearboxes 2 gear diffs both bind?
Whilst in mid motor configuration i have tried 2 new gearboxes and 2 gear diffs and when the gearbox is tightened up it binds?
ball diff in both gearboxes works fine but both gear diffs are not allowing me to fully seal the gearbox. any ideas? ,there is no side to side movement in the gear diff so is it just too big ? |
i did find that my self just nip up gear box and run it it will free up with time
|
just unscrew a wee bit the gearbox screws and it will be fine.

Hi,
Did you solve the problem, if so how? cos I got the same issue. Thanks. |
I had that issue, I simply loosened the screws until it freed up.

Hi,
I tried that which is fine out if car. As comment above as soon you screw the gearbox to chassis it tightens up again. Thanks. |

My guess is that you've warped the plastic as a result of overtightening the screws. These screws only need to be snug, NOT tight (the ones into the alloy motor mount can use a dab of loctite). But once you've warped the plastic you've ruined the parts, and they have to be replaced. Do as others have suggested and buy new gearbox halves, and assemble and re-install WITHOUT overtightening any of the screws. I'll bet your "problem" will be solved. |

The first gearbox i noticed the lid on the gear diff had been over tightened and the plastic had "butterflied" kind of so i bought a new one, this lid was straight and it still bound, as stated above its pinching the bearings not binding on plastic. If i put the ball diff in everything runs free. |

Are you sure you're even using the correct geardiff? |

maybe you're just special |

If a "team driver" supposedly told you what to do, I don't understand why you're asking here. :eh?: |

Anyway, whilst playing tonight ready for Sunday i measured this: http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps079ffad2.jpg http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps6eba898f.jpg Sorry for the huge crappy iphone pics but im a tad inebriated, Anyways i believe this to be my issue, when screwing the Gearbox up the geardiff goes tight, the ball diff does not. |
Hi,
Yeap I measured the same as you.. Was talking to nice TLR representative Tuesday night and he had no issues with fitting his gear diff. Then he mention he sanded down the "Top hat" side by about 0.5mm to give the diff a smoother action as it was felt the gears were just touching each other. By gently sanding this side down (800 grit) it allows the crown gear to sit closer to the internal gears. So measured his geared diff and would you know it, it measured 17mm!! Not had time to do it yet but feel this is the answer and root cause. Thanks. |

Clean your nails Pimlott :p My din dango had the oversize problem in width even on the second batch of geared diffs. So I got a knife on it and took some material away. What you really need is a hobao :p |

Doesn't surprise me. |

there are 8 small circle indents on the "top hat" bit and i sanded until they was flat. Internal gear mesh is good still and the gearbox casing is now tightened up and its spins free. no more drag. |
Any chance of getting a pic of what you sanded?

http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps6dc09135.jpg Sanded this down till the surface was flat. (this is my spare, the sanded one is in the car) Ran the car today aswell and all worked good  |
That works but makes the diff itself a little tighter...
I didnt want to open the diff again as it was freshly built so I took a knife and cut off some plastic in the inside of the gear box on both sides where the bearing is. Maybe it would be easier with a dremel but it was late at night and I needed to make it work. |
I just started driving... Solved itself that way:-P
