Vintage racing at York
It was agreed at the AGM that we will be running a Vintage class over the winter once a month.
Who would be interested in supporting it and what sort of rules would people want? I *think* it will be a championship so would be nice to try and level the playing field a bit. Cheers, G |
I have a B2. is that vintage or just old crap?
|
Sounds like fun Graham.
I'm in if I can just find the parts I need for my procat..... |
B2 could be a bit new really! :D but you never know......
Andy, what parts do you need? I have contacts! :o Jim will race, hopefully Stu and Damo too. A few others have also said they are interested. If we get one heat it will be cool. What rules do you guys fancy? Sealed can motors? NO minipins? G |
Does sealed can mean 540? Definately no minipins!:D
|
It means sealed can 540 size motors! You can now get them in various winds, also nice and cheap! :D
Minipins just wouldn't look right, soft full spikes would look more period. Old electrics and cells would also be well cool! G |
Hi Graham.
I've got quite a few packs of Glyn Peglar 1700 SCE's that look ok and a few packs of SCR's the nice black ones... I've also got a PB Maxima which is a runner, could do with a new shell though. (If you take out the jumps I could even get my PB Pro 10 around !) The Procat is in lovely condition, I just need the gearbox plastic C shaped part that wraps around all the gears, looks like a big hook shape and sits inbetween the metal gearbox plates. I could also do with an undertray, what do you know ??? I've also got a nice old skool tekin speedo which I got reparied not too long ago (at crazy expense) so it could be the full retro setup. I know Jimmy has fancied this for a while, so I'm sure he'll have any number of old gems to run. 19T Spec motors would be good, as I guess a few people would have one knocking about ? |
I would like to join in on the fun, although I highly doubt that Jimmy will let me race any of his vintage cars! I imagine they break too easily, and even if they don't I am sure I would find a way to break them
Can I race my mini instead? |
If this beast is eligible I'll probably come over for a play, wouldn't be doing a full championship though.
Think there's an old Tekin 410 and some Parma 1700's kicking about here too, although plain 19T and no minipins would probably be a sensible compromise. |
I need an older car for this, the XX is a bit like the B2, not really vintage.
I NEED a JRX 2. |
Just a thought...
I hope graham isn't going to run one of his old Preds ! I'm sure you could class it as 'vintage' at a push ? |
The choice will be baffling but I supect G will be running a gold-tub.
Loads of old crap & not so crap |
Stu, you can run my JRX2 whilst we find you one and I will run the gold tub RC10, both fully set up and running but probably need a KO receiver and the shocks sorting so they don't laek oil!!
We could probably draw up a fairly comprhensive list of eligible cars and consider anything else as an exception. I agree with 19t limit although personally I would like to use the old 3300 mah cells I have kicking around. The skill will be getting the cars set up on the old skool tyres like schumachers and mardave spikes, also Dynamite tyres used to look ace when I ran these cars first time round!! I'll start the list and feel free to add to it or say it should not be on!! Tub chassis RC10 any derivative, stealth or six gear Losi JRX2 base pro or SE ( Losi XX too new and too competitive as proved this year, I thank you!!):D Losi Junior 2 Mardave Meteor Mardave Cobra Mardave Apache Schumacher, Cat, Pro Cat, Boss Cat, Cougar 1, Cougar 2 not 2000??? Any PB Any AYK Any Hirobo Any Marui Tamiya, I would say anything before the Vanquish, no Top Force, Egress etc Kyosho, anything before the original Lazer eg. Mid Optima, Optima, Ultima, Scorpion, Salute etc SG Coyote, do they still exist? Stuck now!:p |
I think a silvercan 540 would be better personally - some of these cars a 19 turn is a WILD WILD motor. lets not forget a 19 spec is far and away more powerful than a 19turn modified from back in the day.
but hey, thats just me! ;) |
Could go with 27t motor such as Parma, Demon etc. 540 Mabuchi are OK but would'nt pull the skin off a rice pudding!!:D
|
That reminds me! I havs an old meteor in the garage - minus half the transmition and the shocks...:(
|
Well what motors should we run? We don't want to damage some of the really old stuff by putting stupid motors in them. :(
York already run a 540 class, which I believe you can get a 20 turn jobbie now with a built in fan. Run forever, no maintainance :D G |
Just been looking at the York club website to make sure we're still racing tonight and there are only 2 dates for the vintage series on the calander. Surely some more will need squeezing in?
|
Why not just go buy a re-release Hornet, Grasshopper or Frog and run it?
That would be a ton of fun, and you wouldn't really be to bothered about breaking things ! |
|
Get it bought and run!
I'm just putting a stealth RC10 back together to run, but if I'm getting beat i'll throw the bosscat on! G |

There a few Gold tubs on Ebay USA, only the one JRX tho' and I'm not paying that much, I may do a Doughty and jump ship to AE. Are body shells available for RC10's? I'd want to do it in the black & white. |
Yeah you can get them Stu.
G |
Hello Stu! back from my trips around Europe, hope you had a good time at f3's and in the pikey van, no more thefts I hope!
I have an RC10 body on order at Rossy models, should have turned up by now?!! Engine coming out of RS2000 tommorrow night if you want to help? I can pass the JRX2 on if you want to get it race ready, shocks and KO receiver. Looking forward to Mull, Goozer already on phone telling me where we are watching. Got some new Kumho's on the Scooby so looks like we are going up in that. Northy, I need some RC10 front wheels that are one piece so I can fit proper tyres, my wheels don't have the plastic ring for the centre, you did say you might have some going spare??:D |

Nov 25 Jan 6 March 24 Maybe 2 results from 3 to count? Motors? Maybe the 20 turn silvercan 540's will be a good compromise between 27's & 19 Specs. Who can get hold of a few? |

I need a rabbit to clean my garage floor after the RS has just haemoraged oil all over it.
Can I borrow Marshal as he seems to be excelling at this job? |
Stu, did you really mean to type this or is it on your mind or heaven forbid you are doing it as you type??!!

Motors then guys, what should we run?
G |
Stuff like my chain drive dogfighter wont really like a 19 turn, but I do have a NEW hornet and frog- both of those could cope with it I think. only trouble then is tyres.
outdoors on grass and stuff it wont really be too important - especially with crap motors but indoors my frog / dogfighter tyres aint gonna have any grip at all on the polished floor |
I think we should get some silvercans off Sunday Best, 20 Turn if available. Who has some info on these (are they HPI motors)?
Jimmy, we may be able to get a bit a sponsorship from whoever can supply the things, even if we can just et the motors at a reduced rate. Coming back to something Mr W said earlier on I think anything originally released pre-1990, so the Frog could be in, even tho its a re-release. |

some stuff the likes of Tamiya might improve beyond the original spec.. but the FROG is pretty much exactly as crap as it ever was - but just made stronger like having proper drive shafts instead of HEX shafts that wore out in 2 runs.
|
Jimmy, run the frog, you can add the pics to your review.
G is gonna ask Phil T Stud to add Jan 6th to the fixture list. |
sounds good
|
HPI part number 1136 - anyone got contact details for Adam Skelding?
http://www.northernracer.com/motor.jpg |
I've got his email address. Long as they aint spenny thats cool. it would be good to all have the same motor.. I have a few silver can motors from Tamiya kits - but who knows what differences there might be between them
