Older electronics

I bet some of you out there have a nice collection of old school electronics!
Anything nice and interesting to show and share?

Here's 2 of mine. They were sealed in their boxes but I just had to open the for a photo taking session

Sanwa Super Vortex 112
This was the choice esc for Team Kyosho Japan to power their Lazer campaign in the early 90s.

I was shocked to find out a guy at the local track used to have
A Yokomo Super Dog Fighter in the 90's.
Those were the good old days when Associated partnered with Yokomo.
I have some vintage Rc-10 stock motors to prove they were together.
Nowadays it's all about competition.

I've got one of the first design Nosram ESC's that most people in the UK were using in the early 80's. I'll get some better photos up soon but you can just see it in my Optima from the same period.

How about a Demon 2 ESC, vintage 1980. Handles all of 25A through the single power transistor.

hardrider 07-07-2008 07:40 AM

Now that's some real vintage stuff!
Toying with the idea of getting a Super Dogfighter to match the CX9...

As promised some better photos of the "Advanced" FET Controller from Nosram.

I've got some old Radio race car magazines from the time too. I've found an ad from 1988 for the esc, £67.95. That was a month's wages for me back then (I was only working Sundays at the time mind you!).

I've also found a RRC article from July '86 detailing Nick Marsons "Marfet" controller with circuit diagrams and component lists which I tried to build but didn't really have a clue what I was doing as I was only 14.

Hi, can anyone identify this mystery ESC? It's defniately old - and it actually works pretty well too.

It was in a "loft-find" optima that I bought off ebay last year, and the seller knew even less about it that I do...

Looks almost home-grown...

Thanks,
Ty

GRIFF55 20-07-2008 05:03 PM

i remember those, they used to come in a clear shrink wrap. Can't remember what make, sorry

traffman 20-07-2008 05:42 PM

That looks like the speedo that glynn peglar used to make .

Hi, yes it was indeed in a thick clear shrink wrap when I received it. The wrap was pretty beat up though, with little incisions here and there for accessing the pots and lots of various tape residues covering it. Here's a picture of it from the original ebay listing...

I cut off the shrink wrap, and encased it in black electrical tape for a while when I ran it in an old Falcon, but it's now just relegated to the odd-parts bin...

Was it a pretty popular unit in the UK? From what period would you guess it to be from?

Fwiw, if anyone would like to have it, you're welcome to have it for the cost of postage...

Cheers,
Ty

I cannot remember if the esc had a name or it was just Glynn Peglar ?
I remember that it came with a Shummacher Cat XLS my mate bought off a guy in Wonderland Models circa 1989 .
I know it was a that kind of speedo as he sent it off to Glynn for repair.

GRIFF55 21-07-2008 07:57 AM

Wasn't it a lazer speedo? Just kinda rings a bell

super__dan 21-07-2008 10:11 AM

Wasn't a Bobtech was it, think his name was Bob Gelstharp from near Cardiff somewhere. A nice chap!

GRIFF55 18-08-2008 11:57 AM

dominator (nosram) wasn't it? 3 versions i think

JBL 18-08-2008 06:39 PM

I think the old Nosram speedcontroller could be a extermintor pro?

When I gave up in the early 1990s, the ESC i used was a Speedmaster Ultra Gold Star with a 12 turn limit (this was in 1989).
Here is the racing gear I used:- Glynn Peglar 1700 SCE's, KO Esprit with the steering lock knob at the top, KO world champion servo with it's seperate fet booster, Tekomo pro plus slope charger.

My buggy preference was mainly Schumacher (Cat XLS,Procat or Cougar) although I did try Kyosho ZXR's and Yokomos for a time. I did convert my Yokomo into a Cat-fighter, meaning a Cat front end being fitted to a Yokomo chassis. The motors were quite special being a sponsored driver for B&R motors, the winds would be 15 triple or 14 doubles.

After returning back to the racing scene again last year, I am still running speedmaster speed controllers again. The models I use are either X500 or X3 with no motor limits. The speed ultra silver star is still available, but is much smaller than back in the late 1980's.

traffman 18-08-2008 11:31 PM

I used a speedmaster silver star in my lazer and tomy intruder.

I bought a nosram after that and i ran a mg 17 quad motor back in the day with a tekomo pro slope charger.

I was a works MG Driver back in those days ! Still got a couple, and still have the one in my CAT2KTC that I won the Scottish champs with in '95 !

I know it's not vintage as such, but I just picked up a Novak Hammer Pro to go in my 95 CAT !

I'd love to find a Demon 2DH to go back into my Kyosho Beetle, as that was what I ran back then, and yes you could hear the click very clearly !

Here's an ebay snip I just got

I got an old LRP speedo off Mr Booth once and that looked pretty similar to the one ni clear shrink wrap...that too was in clear shrink wrap. I think the team drivers used to run them like that when they were testing new products. I think now they just run the new software in older cases.

when i recently purchased a car it had oldish electrics in it,

a servo, reciever and esc, all pictured

Mike Haswell 21-04-2011 09:11 PM

The Corally is the MMS 2 - the the second generation. The original had fixed built-in limits, I'm sure I have one in the loft - will dig it out over the weekend.

And I will see what else I can dig up.

Here are the original Corally credit card speed controllers - one is for 8 minute racing (1/12th) and the other is 4-5 minutes (had a higher current setting of 50 amps).
