I'm struggling to work this out :(

If I know:

Price per L
MPG that a car does

How do I work out the cost per mile?

How about:

Price per litre x 4.54 = price per gallon (ppg)
ppg / mpg = price per mile

You need to convert the litres to gallons I think it is 4.4 litres per gallon then go from there.

£1.39 per litre x 4.54 = £6.31 per gallon

Car does 38 mpg

£6.31/38

£0.16 per mile in fuel.

Calculate the cost per gallon by multiplying the cost per litre by 4.546.

Divide this number by the MPG to get the cost per mile.

I just use the app on my iphone. Does all the hardwork for me:thumbsup:

Cost per mile usually isnt just your fuel though, just to toss you a curve ball.

just found that im only getting around 35mpg in my 2.0 diesel mondeo which is down by between 9-11mpg :(

my '98 mk4 golf tdi won't depreciate anymore than it has already. if anything it'll start to gain value in 10-15 years purely because it's a golf hehe

Ok, then it'd be:

((Cost of servicing & repairs + cost of tyres + cost of insurance + cost of MOT + cost of any other vehicle related expenses*) / number of miles) + (Price per litre x 4.54 = price per gallon (ppg)
ppg / mpg = price per mile)

(* depreciation = value at start of period - value at end of period)

if your taking the "official" figures forget it, there computor generated.

yeah mine says 62mpg on paper, but I can only just manage 52mpg over a full tank

No they aren't.

A series of standardised test cycles are run, everyone runs the same ones, then the results are used to get a series of "official" fuel consumption figures. (and CO2 figures as well)

The reason very few people get anywhere near the "official" figures is that they don't drive exactly as per the standardised test cycle.

My R32 only works out at about 20-25p per mile on fuel, that's not that bad really :p

0.10p a mile for me

average about 14 ppm for my 2lt tdci cmax.

does this test inc speed bumps and teenagers that don't give a T**s :lol:

chuckle bus 11p per mile on a good run at a steady speed, normal weekly running about 16p

I was getting 44-46mpg a few tanks ago but my car is running realy rough and mpg has gone down to around 35mpg :(

before was 520 miles till reserve light came on last night was 412 mile till reserve light came on...........

engine feels flat and smoking quite a bit, sometimes a constant trail of smoke behind me driving normally, thats without the jerking action that is happening aswell between 1750-2250 rpms any speed, any gear its happening !!!

MOT coming soon so will probs fail on other things and then get rid depending on how much it will cost to get it through

No :( Until moderately recently it didn't even include things like AC, headlights or running the stereo.

Might just be something simple, we saved (and then sold) a diesel by putting a couple of tanks thro with injector cleaner. (Could have been any one of a dozen other things, but in this case it was 15 quid well spent)

Mine had same problem. On advice I unplugged the mass air flow meter and the smoke went. Turned out to be a split in the intercooler. £350 inc parts and labour.

Was it a split in the intercooler itself or the pipes ?

The intercooler. Thats the only thing that has ever gone wrong with my car. Like you my mpg went down and loads of the black stuff spewd out. Never had a problem since. Mpg back to normal.

check the pipe between the turbo and the intercooler + the pipe between intercooler and thottle body too. wot car is it?

I always use 4.545496 litres to a gallon.

An Uncle gave me a small imperial to metric slide calc back in the 70's when going metric was the fashion and it was on the front cover and it's stuck with me ever since.

Checked the pipe coming off the turbo,had to slide it back on a bit and noticed it was wet with oil. When my mate was revvingthe engine i could hear a hissing sound but coudnt see or feel where any air leaks might have been..........

Its a 2.0 TDCI (130bhp) mondeo on an O2 plate, just coming upto 97k miles.
