3D Artists

There's too much confusing CAD talk on this forum, so lets get creative - who here does any proper 3D modeling, not involving numbers I mean. I know CAClarke does some Lightwave madness. I confess I'm more happy with Photoshop but I've used 3D from stuff like read3D and imagine on the Amiga, to Hash Animation Master, Lightwave, 3DS Max and now use Maya at work (as well as a few bespoke 3D modelers)

At work (this job) I've mostly done concept sketching and photoshop. Some Maya modeling and now working in UnrealEd mostly. After this project I think we're set to start playing with (and using) ZBrush, as there's only one guy that uses it at the moment - but it looks amazing, proper 3D for artists.

So come on, who's a 3D genius, apart from mr clarke - as we know he is.

blitzboy 29-04-2008 08:37 AM

i used to play about a bit on cad quite a few years ago myself jimmy but thats about it but id be interested to see what people have got to say zbrush sounds interesting though mate will have to have a look myself i think you got any links mate :D

CAClark 29-04-2008 09:18 AM

Be cool to see more :)

Where is it you work Jimmy?

telboy 29-04-2008 09:27 AM

Id love to have a go at it, but have never had access to any decent programs. So I am strictly a sketch and fine art person.

But like I say, I'd love to have a go with a propper 3d piece of software.

:D

team17(.com) - ZBrush looked like a right bag of toss when I first saw it - reminded me of a program like Bryce - comedy badness. But I guess it's changed a lot, so you CAN 3d model, texture etc all with a wacom pressure sensitive pen. Tbh you'd still want to model the basics in Maya or something but the detail you can then put on with ZBrush and how easy it is to use is crazy.
Really nice for games as you can keep your low poly model but use the normal map generated from the super high poly Zbrush version.

I think there's a trial on there if you wanna have a play - http://www.pixologic.com

used to use 3d max a bit but put it down to concentrate on compositing and 2d animation. going to be picking up maya soon to try n get back into it,so if anyone knows of some good maya sites with tips/tutorials, it would be handy for me

I made an ace low poly JGTC Honda NSX for a racing game once, I did it in zmodeller, but I can't find it :(

I was really pleased with it and my textures, but then someone else re-did the texture for me and I was blown away with how cool it looked... I almost cried with proudness...

I really want to find it again, it must be somewhere....

SHY 29-04-2008 10:42 AM

Elvo is a very good 3D designer, I think he uses SolidWorks (only) now. He's made some really nice RC car chassis designs!

Myself I tried Calligari TrueSpace many years ago, but I never really had the patience. 2D and PhotoShop suits me better :D

Jimmy, tell us more about your (paid) work! Mostly graphics for games?

Chris Doughty 29-04-2008 10:48 AM

found some pictures in an old forum, all these are in-game a few with a bit of post photoshop level adjustments.

this was back in 2002 in a game called 'RACER' and its still not finished now...

Very nice Doughty! Do you work with 3D today?

Chris Doughty 29-04-2008 11:05 AM

no, that was just an after work thing.

my day-job is NetApp NAS and Unix/Linux Compute Farm stuff

SHY 29-04-2008 11:11 AM

Cool! Part of my job is VMware & SAN, we're looking into NetApp for the time being. Very interesting solutions! I especially fancy the de-dupe and snapshot technology!

Anyway, not bad for after work then!

Who does 3D body models for A-C? (if anyone does?)

Chris Doughty 29-04-2008 11:13 AM

the bodys for the AC cars are done the old fashioned way, sand paper and hard work, my dad did the S4 and Atomized B44 and Craig Harris did the S2.

back to 3D art stuff...

Chris Green 29-04-2008 12:36 PM

I use Solidworks most days at work, and have done for the past 7 years or so.

However, it is used mainly for layout work, and detail design, not any of this fancy rendered stuff!

mole2k 29-04-2008 12:54 PM

I remember you making that car Chris!

I had been making an rs500 at the time but it never got up to the point where i could put it in the game.

Chris Doughty 29-04-2008 01:10 PM

I really wish I had (or could find) the 3d mesh for that, it was my best work ever!!

CAClark 29-04-2008 01:15 PM

I think cars are one of my favourite modelling jobs these days :) I even contemplated modelling the Durga

have you thought of posting on the racer forum see if anybody has it knocking about ?

Chris Doughty 29-04-2008 02:09 PM

I might do, I know there were a few peopel who had the 3d file as well as me.

timmy121 29-04-2008 03:02 PM

i use one called pyhta at work mainly drawing joinery items but some time get to do a building with all the joinery items in and you can do like a walk throw thing with it, but it's a bit basic like

glypo 29-04-2008 03:06 PM

I don't get it, where's the fun unless you involve the numbers?

dirtrider 29-04-2008 05:28 PM

Big ups to solidworks... I think you should differentiate between game moddeling and real CAD stuff... Solidworks is exact... Maya is... for show ;)

I think the HPI Hellfire SS demo on their site uses renderings straight from Solidworks.

I LUVE Solidworks... unfortunately I can't use it on daily basis :( It's not my 'real' job :)

Hi Jimmy,

I do 3D stuff fulltime, going from product viz to commercials. Use rhinoceros, 3ds max and photoshop + after effects.

Here's my site: www.aversis.be

(here's one of elvo's car designs I rendered once :-) http://www.aversis.be/3dexperiments/09.htm )

blitzboy 30-04-2008 02:48 PM

CAClark 30-04-2008 03:05 PM

So hey guys, those who have done 3D, how about posting up 2 of your favourite pieces of work?

Cheers!

CAClark 30-04-2008 10:49 PM

Oh now that is nice! Done in MAX?

How long did it take you to do?

Nice post.... anyone else? :)

andys 01-05-2008 07:25 AM

Yep. Max poly modeling for all the geometry. Textures designed and drawn in illustrator and photoshop. Rendering with and Vray and HDRI lighting.

telboy 01-05-2008 09:13 AM

Wow, I wish I'd gone into 3d design instead of following the print design route. We only ever did 'normal' designing for logo's and posters etc.
Is it dificult to do? or is it as simple a using 2d design programs and just adding an extra plain to work on?

Some of the stuff is awesome on here, it'd be nice to see more peoples work though.

Chris Doughty 01-05-2008 09:36 AM

getting a 3D application and getting a nice simple shape and making a pretty render is fairly easy and intuative to pick up.

doing what Andy has done is just another level that many people will never acheive, its the details and realism that are an art to do.

rowanp25 01-05-2008 09:45 AM

I use the open souce stuff as in blender n the gimp! im still leaning but its good fun and im getting used to it! i used shade 7 before that but i do it all for fun. im a musician really so a dose of cubase anyone??
ps ill post some dodgy pics when im on my own comp!

SHY 01-05-2008 12:05 PM

@Andys: that's sick man! *APPLAUSE*

CAClark 01-05-2008 12:26 PM

Anyone else have anything cool to post? :)

smokes 01-05-2008 12:28 PM

Damn andy that so good shame i am only a solidwork Mechanical Engineer
