Cougar Invernational Build
Just some pics of the build of the Cougar for the Vintage Invernational race, Nathan Ralls will be on the sticks with this car.
Thanks to Dave Holmes for the bits, here is what I'm starting with, http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/465f24db.jpg I have another Cougar 1 that I got from ebay a few months ago so will make 1 good car from the pair. |
Here are some pics from today:
http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/b07626ac.jpg Ball raced steering from my eBay car (see other thread) which is a bonus! B4 shocks spaced out and fitted with Schumacher rod ends http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/56f1f0be.jpg |
Some pics of the other doner car, I got this from eBay a few months ago.
With the pile of Cougar 2 parts I'll make 1 good race car from the pair http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/P1010485.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/P1010484.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/P1010486.jpg |
Nice job mate!
Building queens out of a few wrecks is exactly what I'm doing too :wub Keep it up. |
Hey Mark
You really set yourself some challenges don't you  You could do with some Cougar 2 front wishbones to get the geometry right on that. Seeing as most of it looks like a C2 Works. Al |
I spy some TRX1 parts :)
Awesome build, I'm going to see what vintage weapons I can dig out this weekend  |
Cheers Al! It'll all be good in the end!
Yes I wondered what the white parts were Northy. Did a little bit last night: Servo in, tried to use the Schumacher mounts but the were too wide so used some 12th scale ones I had in my box. Hpi purple turnbuckle too, used an old school KO servo http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/40d023c2.jpg |
It looks like you've got enough bits to do a mid-engined variant.
This used to work amazingly well on carpet with the TopCat. No, really... |
Yes maybe a mid motor one day!
A little update, got cells in place and just need to figure out a way to stop the cells moving side to side, maybe some servo posts on there side or a bit of carbon, we shall see....... http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/71475d81.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/7716eac0.jpg |
|
Yes seen that Mark, nice but I like these old Cougars as it was my first race car
That would make a great race car that Fabix one |
Double sided tape them in
We made a rocket powers cougar back in the early 90s we made an Alu angle with a d size rocket engin jubilee clipped to the plate then the plate bolted in on the original gearbox fixing a small Rx pack up front to power receiver and servo and a rocket egnigter to shoot this thing across our local playing field. It was all good until the back blast blew the rear bulkhead to bits great fun tho |
How about putting the saddles in the rear corners of the chassis like a cougar 1? Electrics down the middle
|
I'd suggest putting them across the chassis as far forward as possible. They weigh less than the original nicads, so putting them anywhere else will play hob with the weigh distribution.
|
Cheers for the advice guys, I'll have a play with the cell location when its up and running.
I may get a lipo tray from SX3 and bolt this down once happy on the location, have to see what Nathan reckons when he tests it out. If I stick with this location of cells I will add some weight under the cells and maybe on the front bulkhead too. |
looking awsome buddy. cant wait to get out and test it woop woop

2 Attachment(s)
hi Mark
this is my cougar 2, i run brushed in it but saddle lipos, in this set up the car is quite balenced i put about 30 grams of wieght under the nose cone [handy place and you cant see them] the car does handle better with cougar 2 wishbones [ the shock mount is different too] and there were 3 different lenths of rear wishbone available i find the std mid ones best hope the pic helps with your rebuild Attachment 38968 Attachment 38969 |
CGR2 'WORKS' ?
Any reason why you aren't running the Works rear suspension, the swept CGR2 front arms and the CGR2 front tower?
The Mk1 arms make it a longer wheel base too. Just thought to ask if this was a tuning option or do you lack these items in your inventory? Cheers-Jason |
Hi Jason, these are the parts the car came with, I have a NIP Cougar 2 front tower but I offered this up to the B4 shocks and the tower looked a little too tall for them.
As for the wishbones, again these are what came with the car/parts lot. I like the look of the Cougar 2 arms, do Schumacher still make them? What's the difference between the works rear arms? Any idea on the part number?? Any tuning tips would be great..... |
Mate the Cougar2 works was released around 93-94 sometime and was the final refinement of the series and in my opinion got it right with all the special parts that went into it.
The rear arms were one off items for both this car and the Bosscat works. Smaller and lighter hubs were used along with smaller and lighter flanged bearings. No doubt this played a part in reducing unsprung weight. The front 'swept back' arms also changed cornering characteristics. All the Cougar2 plastic parts were made from P.E.P. from memory. Maybe some one here could shed some more light on these items. I have a new in pack set of front arms and good condition used rear arms, hubs and bearings if you want to PM me. Cheers-Jason |
Thanks for the info Jason, looks like I have a Std Cougar 2 then.
I'll drop you a PM ref suspension arms |
Gearbox rebuild next up, all went pretty well really, flipped the diff plates and added the Schumacher spring washers to the diff bolt to keep tension on it.
Added M3 hex bolts and new self tappers and bearings though out. http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/cbbac828.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/907a124e.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/a5323063.jpg All done and ready to go on the chassis! http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/0a49f151.jpg |
knowing how well you build a car mate im really looking forward to racing this
bring it to faversham next week if you are down as have a big bag of bits for you know ;) |
Thanks Nath :wub
I'v ordered a lipo cradle for it that I need to fit, then rear tower and shocks and its done. Even got a brand new shell for it from Penguin rc shells, we need to think of a retro Ralls Racing scheme! |

Sounds cool about the paint job Nath!
Done a little more over the past few days: I have settled on this saddle cell location, I used the Schumacher Supastox battery cradle (£5) and Predator battery posts and a home made carbon strap. Gearbox and tower on all ok and the wing mounts on with new rubber bands! http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/844bbf43.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/18aa9472.jpg So next up are shocks on the rear, wheels fitted, shell to be cut out and off to have a retro paint scheme. Then the car will be off to Ralls Racing HQ for the rest of the electric install and a shake down test, can't wait to see it go! |
Your solution for the battery installation looks very neat!
I look forward to seeing this completed with Nathan's retro paint scheme:cool: |
Try putting the shock towers through the dish washer if you want to spruce them up.
|
I mid motored one of these years ago. Real easy to do and went well. I remember fitting an agr 8x1 motor in it and trying to set off the speed camera on the main road By my house with it.
|
Shocks on the rear now, plastic drive shafts in too as these are stronger than the roller shafts I had fitted.
I had to use Schmucher long ball joints on the rear shocks to get the right droop Added some more purple washers, got to love the bling! Lol http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/b7061560.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/35b20452.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/5933869e.jpg |
It's finished!
Cut out the Penguin RC Cougar 2 shell and added a HB Rear Wing, bit big for the retro look but will be good for some downforce! It's ready to go off to Ralls Racing HQ for the Esc, Motor and RX install and some race rubber to be added! One last job is to adapt a gear cover on to it, std Cougar won't fit, tried a B4 one and that's too narrow, any ideas?? Losi XXX? Final pics for now: http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/e2253476.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/809429f9.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/60353d00.jpg |
Hey Mark
Has Nathan done the body yet? Would love to see it. Also did you manage to get the C2 front wishbones you needed? Al |
Hi Al, well I gave the car to a very exited Nath last Wednesday, he is going to put his gear in it and then send the shell off to paint to his sponsor Custom Blitz for a retro Ralls scheme
No C2 works R/H arm as yet but got a PM from Moozo on rc10talk so hope he has come to the rescue! As soon as Nathan has some pics I will post them up. |
Cool, wish I was going to oople race just to see it.
So its just the rear works arms you need, not the Cougar 2 front swept back wishbones? Al |
I'll have to bring it to Torch for a race then!
I have C2 works rear hubs from ebay to go on, I have a front pair of works arms thanks to Moozo! But yes some works rear arms would be good if anyone has any?? |
That would be good :) come down for the LMR GP in September I'll speak to the guys and see about a vintage heat :D
I'll have a look but don't think I have any rear arms spare. Did you manage to get the flanged bearings for the works rear hubs? They are like rocking horse poo!!! |
Yes why not, a vintage heat will be good fun!
Didnt know about the flange bearings, I have given them to Nath so hope he has some in his spares box and get them fitted. |
Bit of an update before the main event ( oople invernational ) in 2weeks time.
My car's been at Ralls Racing hq for the radio gear, esc and motor to be fitted. It's rocking the Proline dirt tyres too! Looks awesome, big thanks to Nath! http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/55ac1486.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/913a0851.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/afbbbd9a.jpg http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/y...g/7edc2ebe.jpg |
