Need help to ID a vintage transmitter

Can some of you eagle eyes out there help me with identifying this transmitter?

BTW, the guy holding it is Joel Johnson, and the pic is from the 1987 World Championships in Romsey.

Thanks,
Tom

Looks a bit like the KO ex 1 to me? Not really sure.

Thans for your answers. I definately have thought about KO as well, but I was believing it might be this:

Unfortunately I can't see the top of it in this picture. Anyone with another pic of this EX-II where the top is showing?

Thanks,
Tom

I think it's an EX-1 too. The one on the right is the older, but the EX-1 Johnson is holding is even older.
I think it is this one, I had one back in the days :

That will be the third KO EX-1 that was released, the only one with a white steering wheel, as Gayo shows. It would make life easier if KO actually used different names for their radios.

.....now if anyone could help me ID the yellow front wheels of Johnsons 1987 WC Ultima.....
http://www.studio68.no/rc/ultima_joel_01.jpg

First I thought it was some yellow Raider wheels, but then I noticed that the Raider wheels have 6 holes, while these have only 5....

Anyone?

Tom

not sure on the wheels at all but i do know where there is a near identical car with andys arms and everything as i used to have one and know who still owns it :D

TommieG 06-10-2008 09:06 PM

I just received an e-mail from the one and only Joel Johnson!!!
Can you believe it?? I mailed Kyosho America asking them to put me in contact with him, and he did really answer!

I sent him quite a long list of questions regarding his 1987 Ultima, so we'll just have to wait and see what he says about the transmitter and the wheels.

Can you believe it??? He really answered!!!

The front wheels are Kyosho Turbo Scorpion ones, dyed yellow.

It would be good to hear from Joel, there have been many unanswered questions regarding this car for some time.

Wow that brings back some memories , i allways admired that car but was never able to see under the body.

Ok.... so I'll have to look for some Turbo Scorpion wheels for my replica project then ;-)

Yes, various sources disagree on a few parts used by Joel on that car. Some says stadard geared diff, other claims a prototype ball diff. The chassis; some say Trinity while other says D&D. How the heck did he fit the Sanyos down the middle? The S32H servo he used is quite small, but not that small... the list goes on and on, and I've sent the full list of questions to the man himself. Hope he can enlighten us on some of those issues.

Actually I'm quite interrested in seeing the body itself ;-) I'm making a replica of that car, so I asked Joel if he had any pics.... We'll just wait and see...

The body used was a Kyosho Tomahawk shell.
A couple of extra pics for you

Joel just confirmed to me that the transmitter indeed was a KO Propo EX-1 (1985 version). I also got quite a few new details/secrets of the car, I'll come back to that tomorrow....

He actually still has most of the car, and he'll bring it with him to work next week to shoot me some photos!!

terry.sc;
thanks for the photos!

Here's a list of parts used on Joel's 1987 WC Ultima, confirmed by
the Man himself!

Chassis: Made by D&D for Trinity, probably sold by both.
Shock towers: Trinity (he will have to check this to be 100% sure).
Differential: Thorp ball diff (if he remembers correctly). This is new info to me.
Gears: Robinson Racing (on the outside of the box). Again new info to me.
Steering assembly: Linked with RC10 parts.
Sway bars: None!
Transmitter: KO Propo EX-1 (1985 version).
Receiver: Novak NER-2.
Steering servo: Futaba FP-S32H.
ESC: Tekin 190PRO.
Motor: Trinity 17.5 turn triple.

I'll make a bigger "article" later, based on the "e-mail interviews" with Joel. If anyone have anything in particular they're interrested to know, regarding his Ultima and the 1987 World Champs, please contact me.

Tom

Gayo 07-10-2008 07:54 AM

Wow, Joel Johnson... now that is a legend :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Next step is to hook him up on oOple in his own superstar section!

Yes Tom, please post every detail you get from the Man. I can't get enough of that old stuff:wub:D
