Nice shots P_B, im still taking pictures but havnt been taking that many lately as i've been quite busy with various things.

What lighting did you use for that first shot rcTom, it looks good.

Your first red arrows shot looks like it would be awesome with a bit of levels work to boost the contrast losixxx!

after a little play...I think i need to invest in photoshop to improve my images

Nice shots jim, I like the bold colours on the first. What processing do you do to them on the skin tones ?

Lighting!

Look at the reflections in their eyes and that should be a clue....

PS to remove blemishes and add a bit of extra saturation.

mole2k 08-09-2009 10:54 AM

I noticed the softbox and the 3 reflectors in the eye but the skin on the top one just looks perfectly smooth. I guess it's just really good skin, it almost looks like a red channel b&w style effect.

Some static car photography is something I would actually love to give more of a go at, I've taken a few snaps of friends cars before but never really done anything that i've put much thought into, here's some I took the other day. Only just snaps though really, I feel much more comfortable making the car actually do something then just photographing it like a rally than taking static shots.

Here's a few from the F345 race this weekend. I'm new to RC photography, and I've got a compact camera, so any tips for getting started with basic equipment are appreciated. I really love the bits of grass flying around in the shaft of light in the second and third photos. Is there any way to really bring these out reliably?

Thanks!
Ty

Considering those are taken with a compact they are very good indeed.

It depends on what functions your camera has, if you can pre-focus somehow on the area of the scene you want to be sharp (like the area with the flying grass in it) then that will help you get thet effect with each shot.

The first image it my pick - it tells the story of the meeting.
It's the sort of photo that Jimmy would use in an 'A-final' write up.

Is that a Lion?

mole2k 26-09-2009 01:37 PM

Nice racing shots, especially for a compact. The nicely lit up bits of grass are basically a function of the really nice low warm light that was there. Your also shooting into it which has the effect of a rim light, lighting up around the outside of the grass so it actually glows in the photo. It's a very good effect and is used quite a lot (at least by me!) in photograhy.

I agree with stu the first shot is really good as it shows whats going on instead of just an action shot of a car. The action shots are great but for write ups and that the main pictures will nearly always be a picture that shows the event as a whole. My only alterations to that would of been to either zoom out (or walk backwards 2-3 steps) to fit the top of the rostrum and get a bit of a margin around the other cars, aside from that the shot is pretty much perfect.

Thats one scary looking cat showtime!
