Dude, keep me posted on that, very cool. I painted a scale helicopter once, was very difficult, used to painting crash helmets, always a side to sit them down on, now with a scale heli and the guy was very very pedantic about it, he did win everything he entered with it, so much so that the governing body amended the rules to say no 'pro' painted entires which put a stop to me getting any more work from the helicopter fraternity... I quoted for a few jets but none of them went any further than the quote.

Hey bud,

this one is a favour for a pal, but what sort of price were you putting on this sort of work, bearing in mind this one will be very 'RC car' in it's look, three colours, lots of shading, maybe some stencilling/fire etc...

cheers

Ju

eyeayen 08-05-2012 09:10 AM

I'll PM you about this.

Really nice paint job, thats one of the best touring cars bodies Ive seen for a while, love the colours and use of shading, It just looks cool, again very nice work

julianb 09-05-2012 07:21 AM

Cheers,

It was a whole lot more work than I anticipated, the black shading against the silver took forever. Inspiration came in the form of a Franks Bodies shell my lad received for his birthday recently, although I changed the colours and simplified the light detail so we don't have two identical shells in the club... Keep an eye out for his stuff on ebay - very slick work!

Almost forgot, used the RCS Body prep for the first time on this shell, where there's blue shading against white. A penomenal result, no static marks and a perceptibly softer fade. Top marks John, but by god does it stink!!!!

Steveonamission 09-05-2012 02:35 PM

Looks pucka chap! Very clean, and yep can understand how long the black shading took so it is accurate.

I quite like the smell of it actually :wtf:  it's probably not good to breath too much of it in but I do genuinely like the smell of it, probably too many years working with thinners

Hey chaps,

Here's another for one of our Louth racers, Jonathon Edwards. He was quite certain he wanted a looky-likey of Jason's latest ride. Trouble was, every single picture I could find on the web was a slightly different scheme!!! Ended up settling for a 'something like'.

I'm not usually a fan of scale schemes, they tend to look bland without
sponsor logos plastered all over. I did manage to pick up a freebie MG logo off the web, so will be firing up the Roland in the morning to run a large logo out for the red roof panel.

Anyway, I digress. Here's a pic...

Cheers Steve,

lots of test pieces with progressively less air and more thinner. Trouble is, you're a gnats cock away from a spidery mess if you go even slightly heavy...

Here's a question...

Where can I find some masking material to crisp up the radiator grills on my tourers. I like the mesh look, rather than louvres. Any suggestions?

cheers

Yet another shell for tonight. I'm knackered! No more painting for me this weekend!!!

This one's for one of the Louth fast boys, Alex Brocklebank. If you saw the size of this kid you'd understand the nickname... ;-)

eyeayen 12-05-2012 08:16 AM

Liking both these schemes, the zigzag spectrum fade is cool on the previous one and the above one is just so clean, very nice !

Cheers, didn't realise until I sat here looking at the pics that I've missed a chunk of yellow off the bonnet!!!!

Ah well, that's what you get for rushing I suppose....

Having the weekend off to do some RC slope soaring - my major passion, got a load more to finish next week...

Almost finished, painted for an old flying mucker. What a trial this has been, having got so used to painting shells, working back to front, going back to working the 'right way round' and the need to keep shit out of the paint has had me pulling my hair out!!!!

Ah well, a few coats of clear and nobody will be any the wiser... ;-)

Hope you like it.

Cheers

 looks well chap

julianb 17-06-2012 07:50 PM

Cheers,

just the 'turkey feathers' to bling up with some nice metallic shading, and finish the underside of the wings and then it's time for 2K clearcoat. Not my bag, leave that to the man down the car repair shop - value my lungs!

wes j. 17-06-2012 07:57 PM

Awesome work Julian. Are we going to see you track side soon i think Rich Drury is missing you .

julianb 17-06-2012 08:23 PM

Yeah,

I've been crazy busy with the day job and a few long overdue paintjobs like this one. Seeing light at the end of the tunnel now bud!

Might get to race the buggies soon i hope!

cheers

andys 17-06-2012 09:14 PM

Wow - Jet looks amazing !

What kind of paint / airbrush did you use on such a large model ?

julianb 17-06-2012 09:58 PM

Larger areas were blocked in with a really cheap spraygun that came with an equally cheap compressor from Lidl. Everything else done with my Iwata SBS. Paint is a mixture of Auto Air (Coarse Silver base, Transparent Black (for skulls and shading), and Createx Opaque Black and Iridescent Red. I think I'll probably invest in a better quality gun for next time. The spray pattern was very uneven. I ended up misting the coats on for fear of getting thick wet paint.

I actually painted the red first, so only one lot of masking to create flames and shadows, then blocked in the silver. Richard Markham skull stencils and transparent black to create the detail, blended into a more opaque black.

Carbon areas done in the same way as the RC shells, but in reverse.

The biggest issues were an inadequate amount of room to work - painted in my garage, and keeping shit out of the paint - not entirely successful, so some careful flatting between coats!

Hopefully a good clearcoating and subsequent flatting and polishing will cover up a multitude of sins....

eyeayen 17-06-2012 10:26 PM

Looks great so far, I'm sure when the clears on it the colours and details you've put in will pop even more.

Ah well,

back to the shells after the Jet painting project!

Dug out a Speed 6 that's been lying around masked up but unloved for a while. Way back when, I used to stick the window masks in as well as using the masking fluid, don't bother anymore - avoids the annoying glue residue on the glazed areas! - a little 'sticky stuff remover' should sort it in a day or two when the paint isn't so green. Bit of a shame it shows up so much in the window frames, ah well, never mind...

Anyway, decided to experiment with some different colours than normal. Green not usually my thing but this Pearl Lime is to die for! Fluoro orange and yellow, a little carbon and chrome bling and she done.

Remembered why I stopped using Fasmask too...like trying to remove sunburnt skin if not applied thickly enough...

If anyone's interested she's in the for sale section.

Cheers

Ju

eyeayen 25-06-2012 08:13 AM

Nice green ! Very neat

Steveonamission 25-06-2012 12:01 PM

Greens not usually my thing either, but colours work good together, looks pretty smart:thumbsup:
