I understand the main reason for the Stig's disguise is so the producers can use different drives to cater for racing and other commitments, also as mentioned to allow company test drives to post lap times without raising suspicions. I have been told by some quite reliable sources that amongst others Nicolas Minassian has fulfilled the role on a number of occasions, both black and white. There were some quite in depth threads on pistonheads.com on this exact subject.
