RC Mart also replied to my recent inquiry that it was discontinued...

I got an email from Speedtech saying they're expecting new kits in 2months. Tamiya seems to just make batches at will and only if they are selling.. since they just won the euros i'd expect a larger stock this time. When tamiya runs out of stock they have a habit of reporting them as 'discontinued' but w/in a few months somebody will have a few new ones..

Just read on some thread here that Tammy is planning a shaft driven 4wd car...I wonder why lol. And yes the 511 line is done and discontinued.

The 501x arms are no where near as tough as the DEX arms. Feel both in your hands or try screwing a shock end screw and u will see. You can strip the Tam plastic at will...not with the DEX.

Secondly Like I said, the car was built perfectly and ran great INDOORS ONLY. Guys Im not bashing the car...its amazing I know it cuz Ive owned it...but in terms of maintenance, durability and dare I say performance?? The dex is the cream of the crop. Theres no doubting it...drive one then you will see. It is the future of RC. Theres no magic diff setting, no pulleys to worry about if a tooth is chipped, no belt tension settings to experiment with, no "trick" to remove the spur...which DOES destroy the center pulleys as well as the belts and other parts which include ur spur from twisting it and it rubbing on the pinion. You have to remove all your gear from one side to get to the lower motor mount screw just to adjust gear mesh. Cmon man...to deny this fact is just plain ignorant.

Now isn't this funny...

You're all arguing about a thread that's nearly one year old. I think the guy's made his mind up and had his new car by now, whichever it was...

Again, some people talk about things they donīt know anything about...

Instead of wondering why. Wonder if it's true first :woot:
We already got that you didn't like your 501x but this thread isn't about the 501x.

t8rtot 04-09-2010 05:56 PM

I want to hear from somebody on the inside that its discontinued. Everytime tamiya is out of stock they list it as 'discontinued' when I get facts there is a new car coming or if I get confirmatiom from tamiya that the 511 is done then we can speculate (which some of u guys are doin now) until then.. all this is hear-say.

Never said I didnt like it...if u ACTUALLY read...I said I loved it BUT...Read my friend.

Secondly you all can speculate about what Tamiya is doing, I mpretty darn sure and if Im wrong then Im wrong but it makes sense and is logical that they make their car more care free. If they are smart and want some success here in the states they will follow a shaft driven design and incorporate all the things that made the 501/511 great in the handling dept.

does it really matter if the 511 is discontinued or not? Parts are plentiful and always will be. Most of the consumable parts are shared between 3 cars so you will never fall short of parts in the future.

That's impossible to do, what makes the 511 handle so well is that it's a belt driven car...

DCM 05-09-2010 08:51 AM

What car is better is subjective, and what makes one car better for one person, makes it worse for another.

As for parts quality, the only issue I have heard of in recent weeks, it ball studs on the Tamiya being a little (a lot) on the soft side, which isn't exactly difficult to rememedy now, it is?

As for toughness, I think I can say, from experience, the 501X suspension is as tough as they come, simple's, I run 4, yes four DB-01's, they have exact same drivetrain and suspension, and in 2 1/2 years, replaced two pulleys, two belts, one layshaft pulley, and the odd suspension component. The only thing that has taken a hammering, is inner hinge pins, I now use drill blanks, as they are easier to buy.

Again, this thread is NOT about 501x but 511. You can adjust gear mesh on a 511 without removing all the stuff on the other side. And if you want, you can do that on 501x too, you just need to select an ESC that fits under the slipper shaft.

You said you loved how it handled, true. But then you rant on about how hard it is to fix it when this thread isn't even about the 501x.

The thing i understand least is how you can say that the 501 handles great and then promote shaft drive when its belt drive is one of the key things that makes it handle so nice.

If people manage to get the car sorted with a diff cover, wouldn't it be a lot more logical for Tamiya to incorporate one into their design instead of changing the whole transmission line to shaft drive.

Personally i wouldn't be as interested in a new Tamiya 4WD if it was shaft driven.

But all this speculation is indeed pointless. We'll just have to wait and see.

fastinfastout 05-09-2010 12:41 PM

haha

let this thread die now for gods sake!

the thread starter has already bought a car, ended up getting a db01r according to his other posts in other threads

pete68 07-09-2010 12:53 PM

yep got a db01r and loving it !!!

Indeed its not about the 501x but it is a discussion between a 511 and a dex...And having had experience with a 501 which is hardly much difference from the 511 with the exception of "ease of maintenance" and I believe chassis length lol. This is a discussion and is useful for any1 that may be contemplating the 2 cars. It is not strictly about one car but about 2 in comparison and being that I have experience with BOTH I will say what I feel. And yes it did handle great but IMO shaft drive is better and more reliable. I dont know what is so hard that you cant understand:eh?:

Either way, I know the starter of the thread bought a db01r but like I mentioned before a forum is for all to discuss a topic. And so here we are. I had the db01 as well. Great handling car. But again 6 screws per diff cover and if you just so happen to strip a screw in one of those holes god help you because youll have to dremel your diff cover AND possibly destroy your chassis to get that screw out, invest in a screw extractor or porperly grease those screws before putting them in  ...Shock towers that dont allow for full travel of the trf shocks:yawn: You need the atomic carbon shock towers with the 2nd upper row of holes for those to work or else your UJ will pop out in the rear. Uhh, crazy heavy  Stock motor mount is garbage. LoL...The amount of wrenching that "beginner" car required would scare away any beginner from this hobby. It did handle pretty well and at least the belts were properly covered. But again...by the time ur done really making the car work properly youll spend lots more when u can juts buy a DEX and be done with it

Your guys are really gonna look at this lay out and tell me that you'd have no problem on an outdoor loose dirt track and have no issues? lol. OOOK. Its pretty though.

As people have already said, diff covers are recommended for loose dirt track.
