thanks i have tryed it with a 25 pinion gear is ok with it but. on a track i got told i would need a 19 pinion gear and turn slipper back a bit . thankyou for your help i tryed it .but dms racing said i would need about 19 pinion does anybody know what size pinion people use on a track and i was going to put a fast motor in it as well .thanks people for help me

DaveG28 09-08-2009 12:20 AM

You'll need to decide which motor before choosing a pinion, if you put a faster motor in generally you need a smaller pinion, but it would depend on specific motors, so post which one your using. Also, do you know which track? The best help on gearing will come from other racers at that track, though you'll get a good general idea from people here!

Not quite sure I remember us advising a "particular" size pinion for you earlier on the phone, since we did state we dont know the Traxxas car that well since we dont stock it, but we DID say that on the "10 turn" motor you said you were using that a 25/26 sounded way to high for race purpose gearing and to lower it (although no specific number was mentioned).

We DID also say to adjust your slipper clutch accordingly (which on its own will cure the wheelies), we DID say that adding lead weight to the front (in "proportionate" amounts, will help to keep your nose down) and we DID also say to remove the gastly FULL spikes that you have been wrongly advised to run and replace them with more conventional "mini spikes" which is the norm on most UK tracks we run on (this was to prevent the severe grip roll you described). Once ALL of this is done your car should be a LOT better. The only area we did not offer advice was on your 50wt shock oil (which does sound a tad thick TBH - as others HAVE told you) but not knowing the Traxxas shocks and seeing how it "feels" is hard to say whether they are right or wrong for your car (Some shocks with 50wt would be way to heavy on the damping, however some brands would still feel soft - depending on the pistons and hole sizes used inside them)

:woot: :(      :bored:  :p  ;) :wub :D :eh?: :o :wtf: ;)

i have listend to you and thanks for help me i am new to racing lol

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 10:50 AM

the motor i am going to use is 4600kv motor and my traxxas motor is a 3500kv what pinion would you start with 19 or lower

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 10:54 AM

i just got 2 sets of full spikes and i need to try and run them. if i can ??????as i cannot afford any more i spent to much trying to make this to be a buggy it was a rustler vxl to start with but i convered it to the bandit

ch!3f 09-08-2009 12:04 PM

then why put a faster motor in it them if your listening to us.
put that in your car will be loony and wheelie even more.
if oyu could handle the car as it is the yes put it in but you need to learn haw to drive it 1st before puting even more power n speed in it.
as for money sell your old parts and get rid of the full spikes there only good if you drive major off road on mud.

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 01:28 PM

thanks i have been doing offroad bashing for a long time now. and the guy said from the club they would be ok. if i wear them in before .racing with them . i have to make do with what i have got., not spending anymore more money as i am not working i got 2 full sets of tyres they will have to do or i will not start racing then. as i have spent £60 on 2 set of wheels and tyres

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 01:48 PM

its all about the slipper clutch just to get it right i am new to buggys that all :D

Col 09-08-2009 02:47 PM

My 2p worth?

Sell this traxas thing that no-one in the U.K races, buy a cheap second hand B4 or XXXcr that most people will be able to offer race proven advise on and have fun! You'll never look back from a b4 or XXXcr

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 03:01 PM

i got a madrat its the same as b4 but not as strong

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 03:08 PM

i would not sell my buggy its a traxxas rustler vxl as well as bandit vxl:thumbsup:.i would sell the madrat

Si Coe 09-08-2009 03:11 PM

Ok - you are stuck with the full spikes because you can't afford to change them, fine - what you need then are cut spikes. Schumacher actually sell these, but you can do them yourself - just take a pair of side cutters and carefully cut each spike down to about half its original side. This has the same effect as wearing the down a bit, but without the waiting. If you've got 2 sets, do one, try it and see how it goes. It should take some of the edge off the wheelies and the grip roll at least.

Use the 3500kv motor to start with on the lowest gearing you can control (ie no wheelies or wheelspin) - being gentle on the throttle. You will be much slower than everyone else, but this is good. A common newbie mistake is to slap a powerful motor in and be the fastest thing between crashes - its much better to be slower and get clean runs. Once you can do that move up the gearing, and then up to motor but not before.

Fair point on the car - its not bad, but its not a car commonly raced in the UK so don't spend too much more money on it. Once the T-Piece is sorted the Madrat will be better.

Trust me when I say racing is nothing like bashing. You can have bashed for years and still suck the first time you go racing. Steady and careful is therefore the key, especially as no-one else at the track will have traxxas spares - break it and you are going home early!

stampede vxlboy 09-08-2009 03:29 PM

traxxas are strong as hell its all full rpm car as i got all the hopup s for it carsx stand me at about £300to £350 with batterys and lipo chargers and 2.4ghz handset vxl combo is £190 and i got mamba castle esc that i use in it

That is great advice! read that post, and then read it again to make sure it sticks in ur mind! Racing is not all about speed, its about good clean laps 1 after the other. Full spikes are good for indoors on a wooden floor, mini spikes for outdoors. Like Si Coe said, try cutting a set down to half way. If your not sure how to do it, go to a race meet and ask a pro VERY nicely and im sure they will show u.

Si Coe 09-08-2009 06:17 PM

Feed the throttle in gently!

Actually you've got a Mamba esc haven't you?

Ok - set the esc up with:
Punch control 100%
Start power low

That should help. If it doesn't:

Set the throttle curve up so that you have a very shallow start, rising rapidly at about 80% throttle.
Then get a little piece of fuel tubing or similar rubber stuff and stick it behind the trigger on your handset. Ideal it should make it much harder to get more than 80% throttle.
The idea here is to restrict the maximum power of your car to keep it in the zone you can control. Sounds counterintutitive for racing, but remember the old saving:
'In order to finish first, first you have to finish'
At first you WILL set faster lap times with a slower car. Its a proven fact. When you get better, then you start to dial back some of that speed
