I had gear diffs in my DB01R, and they leaked out in one race night - made a mess of the cases and belts. Pulled them out, rebuilt them using some green slime, and same thing. They leaked out around the outdrive, not at the case halves, so the gasket was not the issue, it was the o-ring and the three spacers which were not doing their job. I wanted to run gear diffs so badly as well. I have not tried a thicker/wider spacer yet, that might solve the issue - but a well built ball diff still seems to be the way to go.

I wouldnt be so sure... off road cars have a lot more force running through the diffs than the fastest touring car.

Same with anything off road to on road... a F1 gear box would not last 5 minutes banging around in a rally car for example. Dont under estimate the strain the off road diff goes through.

So put this debate to rest Lee - whaddya use in your diff, the 'captured' thrust bearing kit or separate diff balls and diff rings?

Does not seem like there will be another realise of 511 though?

I love this quote from the description:

"We will release a set of upgrade parts to further enhance the combat power of ITEM42139 TRF511 Chassis Kit."

Chris 08-11-2012 05:40 PM

I mounted the 39T pulleys today, they fit perfectly without contact the gear covers. :)

Fabs 21-11-2012 05:03 PM

The TRF417 diff rings that are to be used with the new ball diffs do have the D cutout that will lock up with the outdrives...

HeavyD99 19-12-2012 02:47 AM

Aluminum Slide Motor Mount (new)
Aluminum Center Bulkhead Bridge (new)
Drive Belts (Front & Rear) (new)
39T Ball Diff Pulley (Front and Rear)

Anyone know if these bits can be purchased separately?

Ordered.

I think €108 + shipping is not a bad deal. Should have it for the new year, can't expect speedy shipping at this time.

Anybody know if I will be able to re-purpose any of the original 511 bits I end up with to a 501X for any benefit?

James 19-12-2012 01:05 PM

Where was this ordered from please?

Just noticed stella models shows them on their eBay store.

Any idea if Tamiya will re-release the 511 or an updated car (Worlds Edition)?

djmcnz 03-01-2013 01:35 PM

Yay! Weekend project... :)

Edit: WTF Tamiya?

The upgrade kit requires you to trim 3 x plastic parts from the stock kit (B2, B8 and A1 if you're still using plastic steering). It would have been relatively simple to re-mould these and include them in the upgrade.

But worse the instructions call for you to "Cut of any sections on BD20 [from the stock kit] that come in direct contact with the ball differential" great but BD20 is an aluminium part!! It's the front suspension mount. :-| What are we meant to do, take a grinder to it???

Anybody a good set up for dirt with the upgrade trf511
Thx

Can I use my old Fredrik diff covers, or do I have to buy new ones now with this upgrade set?

James 30-06-2013 07:40 AM

If you use the old pulleys you might be ok, I assume you can use the gear diffs with the new belts - just simply turn the eccentric housings round further to keep them tight enough - anyone?

djmcnz 30-06-2013 03:03 PM

Be careful if you use any diff cover with any 39t pulley in these, I ruined two pulleys and a belt doing so. There's insufficient clearance within the bulkhead assembly to allow anything to pass through causing everything to bind if even a tiny stone gets in (which it will if there are any at all on your track). I posted about it on here somewhere.

The old diff covers will not work - you'll need Fredrik's new "upgrade kit" diff covers, 1) because the pulleys are larger and 2) the diff/belt is now running/coming out "on the other side". They are already available - see Fredrik's thread.

@trf14, As for set ups, the suspension set up is basically the same for the old 511 vs. the upgrade kit - go to petitrc.com and look for set ups there.

Fredrik Emilsson 02-07-2013 09:44 AM

Would say, be careful to run with 511 at all on tracks with small stones.
I have ruined several pulleys and belts running without covers.
They get stuck between pulley and rear suspension mount.

Short diff covers give some protection, but as I have said before, not sufficient protection on those kind of tracks.

You will need long diff covers to get proper protection on tracks with small stones.

Might do a revised long diff cover for conversion set.

djmcnz 02-07-2013 10:13 AM

I'd be interested in the long ones again.

My track hasn't changed in 4 years so the stones were always there (very, very small 2mm - 3mm stones).

Never had a problem with your long diff cover, it was awesome.

As soon as I got the upgrade kit and used short covers disaster struck (combination of smaller cover and bigger pulley).

Running without covers now with no immediate issues (because the stones seem to get spit right out again if they're 'ingested') but the the peace of mind would be good because something will eventually get jammed.

rcaddict 02-07-2013 03:10 PM

Hey Fred!
I'm in for some revised long diff covers too. :D

Keep us updated!
