A tragic loss... RIP Marco...

Being a biker myself I personally feel that his helmet would have had more chance of staying on and might have possibly saved his life if it were not for his massive hair.

Such a loss to MotoGP and to motor sport. Condolences to his family and loved ones.

I'm sure AGV Italy would have taken that into account when custom fitting it to his head as all Moto GP riders have their own head shape, it's not just off the shelf stuff they were at this level.

Aside that I don't think it's really time to speculate would could have happened, a great rider has just tragically lost his life.

as you can see from the video the bikes front wheel hit the back of his helmet thus ripping the poor chaps head right back with enough force to rip the straps out and the helmet off.

a god awful way to go! :(

Once again you really shouldn't speculate, these helmets are tested to unbelievable forces, something else has happened or failed here to cause this helmet to come off. I've been watching Moto GP as long as I can remember and don't ever remember seeing this happen before. A tragic freak accident.

Can't see a helmet protecting his back though...

Essentially crushed by rider number 46 and popping his helmet off by the looks of things.

Regardless RIP and another sad loss in motorsport

This is what Michele Macchiagodena, who is the Medical Director, had to say:-
“I'm very sad to be here to report about the death of Marco Simoncelli, a friend. Because of the crash he had during the race, in which he was hit by other riders, he suffered a very serious trauma to the head, to the neck and the chest.

"When our medical staff got to him he was unconscious. In the ambulance because there was a cardiac arrest they started CPR (cardiac pulmonary resuscitation). Immediately in the Medical Centre, with the help also of the Doctor of our staff at the Clinica Mobile and local Doctors, he was intubated and it was possible to take off some blood from the thorax.

"The CPR was continued for 45 minutes because we tried to help him for as long as we thought it was possible. Unfortunately it was not possible to help him and at 16:56 (local time) we had to declare he was dead.”

We normally watch motogp on eurosport because i can't stand the bbc commentary.
So we knew something wasn't right when they said that they weren't going to show the race (or what there was of it). Then we heard the news in the car as we were on our way out.

Very sad indeed.
He was my tip for the championship next year, but we will never get the chance to find out now.
Taken too soon.

I know it sounds wrong. But, we lost Wheldon last week and that too was tragic, but he had a pretty good run at the top of his game but marco had just got to the top of the sport and never really had the chance to prove himself in a proper championship run.

RIP Marco...

As much as these things are tested, there's no actual way to simulate the freak accidents that happen on track, and this was one of those freak crashes where everything happens at the right time in the right place....so to speak.:(

sorry this is just my view, this site is used by children and adults alike, witch is good, but posting pics of a a rider dieing and even the slow mo video is a bit wrong, i used to race national bangers all over the country and have seen a few fello drivers die in the sport we love, but due to the love of the sport we carry on.
But out of respect to thr driver/rider and his/her family we all put in to words our condolances but never put up pics/videos,

sorry for my rant but i think its wrong

R.I.P marco ( heart felt feeling to rossi and the other rider)

Very Very upsetting news.Although am not a fan of Moto GP. I have heard from various people he was a great talent in the sport.

He died doing what he loved.

RIP MARCO SIMONCELLI.

I've got to agree with this, it's not right having that picture up there, it should be deleted out of respect.

Thats why I put "so to speak" there Ben. :p

You know what I mean though. For a death to happen, everything (unfortunately) was perfect. Which is what I'm saying when I put down that they can't simulate these sort of accidents in a lab.
:(

Supercoolnothing 23-10-2011 05:03 PM

Sad day for the sport indeed. R.I.P. Marco

Maddy 23-10-2011 05:04 PM

So sad,i hate news like this,RIP.

JohnM 23-10-2011 05:10 PM

So, so sad, you only had to look at Marco and he'd make you smile, then he'd put Pedrosa on the floor, and you'd smile some more.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rossi hang his helmet up over this, seem to remember them being good friends.

stegger 23-10-2011 05:16 PM

R.I.P Simoncelli, Freak accident indeed, How come he was falling off already before he hit edwards ?

telboy 23-10-2011 05:51 PM

he lost the front end, but managed to keep it up on his knee...unfortunately he was already careering towards Edwards and Rossi. :(
