Nice work on those shock towers guys and loving the battery holder.
Myself and a couple of friends are working on some prototypes of our own to at the moment and the attached pictures are of our first batch of prototypes, at the moment in 6mm thick perspex. Thios is the first one to be made but unfortunaly i made a cockup with my measurements I wanted to be able to run the car lower at the rear but I was a bit overzealous with my measure ments and it is a bit high, And also now has no droop! But we will have that sorted by next week. When we have got the measurement right we will also be incorporating the shorter lower link positions which can be seen in the picture. Anyways the finished product will be in carbon once we have got our hands on some :thumbsup: big thanks to Wes Jolly for his excellent cnc milling work on these (no hacksaw required). |
Very nice. On the shock tower the orginal point are the bottom or down? Do some test inform us it's interessting to have two level.
i see you do a part to have a shorter level arm on the front, this is for astro? |
Well the top of the tower was based on the X-pro/x2 rear shocktower which sits slightly higher than the original x2c shock tower. They are the bottom holes, the top just made slightly higher for testing purposes although I doubt I will ever use them, At the moment the mounting points on the tower I have fitted to the car are too low so we will raise them up a bit to get the cars geometries back the way they were, Hopefully then the top row of holes will come in to play and you will be able to run standard and move them to top holes to get the car to sit lower.
I am assuming you are talking about the extra mounting holes I have made for the rear turnbuckles? I have made these to get more steering. The car generates loads of rear end grip and I like to have quite a bit of steering so I am usuing a shorter link to achieve this. The next batch of towers will have this incorporated into them to give more rear end turning options :thumbsup: |
Rob. I've just changed the drawings to amend the holes in the bulk head and i've done two more towers with different droops so we can see which one is best. Will bring them Friday :thumbsup:.

Looks like we have all been doing the same thing then. I have modified my rear tower as Dave using the original top hole as the bottom hole and hand drilling two new ones so the tower is mounted lower. This means that the bottom row of holed is now the same height as the orignal x2c tower (which was my original plan). The top row of holes allows the rear end to be run a lot lower.
I took some measurements on my table with the ride height adjusters wound right up and got the following results: Top hole middle: ride height 18mm total droop 43mm Lower hole middle: ride height 22mm total droop 47mm So you can run it lower in the upper hole but loose a bit of droop. Red those brass bits look good mate how much does the battery tray one weigh? With regards to the big bores fitting looking at the car now I reckon they would touch but I have approximately 2mm left on the original screw thread so you could space them out at the top and bottom to suit. My friend has some big bores on his x4 so I will see if I can borrow a pair off him and see if we can get them to fit. Wes, do they do fluorescent green dye? If they do I might do mine.:-) |

Rob' : the brass battery tray is around 114g. Roughly 95x71 (mm). Towards the big bore , I screwed the rear shock tower between the gearbox and the rear brace.It's better than screwed at tha back (like on pics) Now I can add this 2mm shim and add another 3mm shim at the bottom of the shock.I like to drive with the rear shock perpendicular to the chassis (independently of anti squat) Do any of you design with solidworks?Or good'old paper and pencils?:D |
just using autocad to do ours at the moment, as thats what I use at work for my job. Would like to get into solidworks or inventor though.
