I want to give liquid masking a go, painting some touring shells that i have coming tomorrow.

Im being tight, and wondering as i only want to try it, if the Faskolor Fasmask Liquid Mask (4oz) is ok to use, as in not a pain in the ass and that it puts me off, i.e doesnt peel that good etc. Ive given masking tape ago and i was Epic Fail once things started getting complicated

Havent got a airbrush, just want to use the left over Tamiya air cans that are i have left in the garage lol... Nothing too fancy by design, but would like to back whatever i do with pin stripes around them to define my doodles

it'll work Steve, but needs a few coats. Grab some for me while you're at it :) I've run out.

my self prfere liquid mask as i can seem to cut it better than the tape id recomend trying it on a spare bit of lexan to get the jist of it before you go on the shells and remember not to press to hard with the blade as you will score the body :thumbsup:

I don't hear much 'compliments' about Fasmask, as it is quite thin.

have used bob divleys, fasmask and Jon millers, all are good if used correctly fasmask works fine if applied right, but isn't as good as bob divleys,have 3 shells about to be done with Jon millers stuff,tried a small test sample of it and it was good,

Hmmm. I think mine must have been left sitting in the shop a long time then! It was my first attempt using liquid mask so I didn't know any better - it was really gloopy coming out of the bottle and despite my best efforts it still left thick spongy puddles in the corners. I'll be ordering some of Jon's stuff once it gets warm enough to paint again - definitely got the bug now! :thumbsup:

The newer fasmask is pretty thick now compared to what it used to be. I use it all the time now, as I can't arsed with importing the diveleys stuff.

BUT if the fasmask is being used with rattle cans I would reccomend applying 4 or more coats with a brush. 3 coats isn't enough as the solvent from the cans softens the mask and makes it difficult to peel off.

For TC shells you will need more than 4oz. You will need the larger 16oz bottle at least if you have to apply 4/5 coats. 4oz may just do one shell with 3 coats.

My first experience of using a liquid mask was with an old bottle of fasmask - but I think it was so old that it had gone off. The first time I opened the bottle there was a big, dried rubbery lump blocking the lid. Although I managed to achieve what I wanted (masking out some lights on a Tamiya Mini shell) Despite many coats (5-6) it just seemed too thin & just broke up when I tried to peel it off :(

the current batch is a bit thicker than the previous one so you may need to thin it ever so slightly with water depending on your application.

Fasmask is great, I have used it on hundreds of shells with no issues. I have also tried Bob Divelys stuff which was thinner and IMO more difficult to use (required more coats). Which ever you choose to use, you must ensure you put atleast 4 generous coats on otherwise you may run into difficulties, especially when using solvent based paint. Tamiya is perhaps the worst aswell....

Are you still spraying touring car shells? I have no time to spray nowdays with Uni and my placement. I have been using plain white shells all season! Not a great look :S

Let me know if you are, I'd like a couple doing for the rest of the winter and then some for the nationals/euros etc in 2011.

Thanks for the advice Phil, i went for a bottle of 16oz Fasmask on your confirmation along with Tel's that its pretty decent stuff.

There was alot of people slagging parma's stuff off, but that ended up being there previous stuff i discovered.

Think you can get direct from Jon Miller via his website RCS graphics, or Mike Parker sells it on Number5rc website

RCS only sell 5kg tubs and number 5rc is order only they don't hold stock

so annoying
