A pair of lexan scissors does a pretty good job too, and take about 10 seconds a rim ;)

Cutting:

Only one cut-off wheel will do: the Dremel 545

the x-cut on the inside is not for everyone, it gives a bit more “snap” at full-lock, most drivers will be happy with the +-cut on both the in and outside.


Insert:

Not really needed, but if reaction is to slow and traction is plentiful a touring insert will do the job just nicely ( the foam ones, not preformed / molded). There nice and low-profile and can be stretched to the size of the stagger-rib.


Mounting:

For most conditions, a narrow mount is best since this gives the most traction in the low speed corners. This is done by cutting the inside edge of the wheel away and just mounting the tire in the inner edge the (now) narrow rim. Sometimes the stagger will not fit the outer bead nicely, then it’s better to cut away part of the wheel than a part of the tire. ( see upper drawing of attachment )

For high grip conditions (new astro ) with very fast flowing lines it can be nicer to mount the stagger wide ( less grip, more control ). Than cut the wheel as the lower drawing of the attachment. Now the tire is mounted like an 1/8 tire. Be careful not to stretch the tire to much, than the middle of the tire will be become hollow.

I ran staggers on my 4wd a lot too, especially at Belgium..... even tried them on the REAR! :lol: (its wasn't bad either!)

am I right in thinking I need to remove all the mounting ribs on the wheel in the inner part of it and then glue the tyre straight to that?

I got a set of these when I bought my car and thought they were just tatty old things until I actually tried them and love them to bits. The previous owner had removed the inner lip to the wheel, but the brand new tyres look completely different to anything else I've seen.

Can someone clarify how much of the tyre needs removing and/or how much of the wheel needs removing/reducing.

wheel: from the inside, remove material to the first rib (sharp scissors or a dremel will do the trick)
tyre: trim the tyre beads (if required) so they are a nice fit

so basically just the lip you can see car side of the wheel?

I wouldn't touch trimming the tyre as it has a unique way of folding back on itself, I ruine a set once trimming what I thought was the beam and cutting through it.

On the wheel I just trim the outer rib off with lexan scissors though dremmeling down the lip I've seen when racing abroad, don't know what the difference is back to back.

Or use wheels that the bead fits in the groove - they fit perfectly in the new Cougar front wheels!

but they are to wide for the tyre to sit on them and give a good profile, yes they go on but are spread so wide they dont work right, u still need to remove the inside edge of the rim,

I tried them on a set of B44 front Jconcepts wheels and they seem to fit nicely without any modding. I'll try a set of skinny 2wd fronts next.

I took a set of normal B4 front wheels, removed the inside rib to narrow the wheel, trimmed the bead so it would sit tidy on the wheel, cleaned, whacked it on and glued it, works a treat, like the grip of a slim without all that nasty snatching...

When are Schumacher realising the slim wheels?

I think ive just fecked a set of staggers up..but aint sure cos ive no idea what im doing LOL

Trimmed down the outer beading on the tyre and placed that in the outer bead of the wheel, then trimmed the inside of the wheel down to get it slim and then cut down the other side tyre bead and slipped that in the other side of the wheel. It looks gash though :(
