can you use it with masking tape too?

bigred5765 10-03-2007 11:40 AM

you can but i really couldn't see any reason why you would have to
apart from, name decals etc

telboy 10-03-2007 08:44 PM

Yeah, snap. I never use masking tape any more.

Just looked at the je spares site. Do they only stock the 16oz bottles? i normally buy 3x 32oz bottles. complete with the shipping costs it works out at £16.66 per bottle. The 16oz ones are £10.99 from jespares.
If they can beat £16 on the 32oz then I will start getting it from them.;)

DCM 10-03-2007 09:32 PM

I tried RC-boyz earlier, they only had the parma stuff on there, I bought some of the JE Spares to give it a bash

bigred5765 10-03-2007 10:19 PM

make sure you let it air dry some were warm. i tried to force it and it doesnt seem to like it,i spray mine on with a cheap gravity feed spray gun £8 or so of fleabay that is the one i use, or £21 from everything airbrush clicky link

I was thinking more, that as a shell comes in, I can wash it and mask it before doing the design.

How do blades survive with Dively's and how many coats.

telboy 10-03-2007 11:52 PM

I brush it on, about 3 decent coats. make sure its even though, it doesn't like thick lumps all over the place.
Blade wise, they seem to last forever with the stuff as its a lot, lot softer than the masking tape.

If you use tamiya with it, it does seem to soften it a little and make it a pig to work with sometimes. pactra and faskolor are fine.

DCM 11-03-2007 12:23 AM

ace, well I got some Dively on it's way to give it a bash, and a spray gun to, can always use it for other things I guess to.

rich_cree 11-03-2007 10:23 AM

thought I'd ask someone who knows, is a compressor absolutely necessary? I'm planning on using faskolor paint and I'm guessing those cans probably aren't up to the job?

Col 11-03-2007 10:30 AM

A friend of mine once tried using a spray gun with air pressure supplied from a car tyre. This worked superbly for about 20 seconds and then the pressure was not enough for a good spray.
On the positive side, he grew some excellent leg muscles...

I did my first one with, erm, cans, yes, plural, the cans are realy designed for propelling lacquer paints (realy thin). By the time you have bought a few tins of air, it would of been cheaper to pay someone.

bigred5765 11-03-2007 06:08 PM

you can go to b&q warehouse or something similar and get a cheap compressor for 50 quid or so tried tyres cans all sorts but compressor is the best way and for £50 is it worth messing about

telboy 11-03-2007 08:53 PM

I don't think the cans of air would have enough pressure anyway for faskolor.

deffo buy a cheap compressor. it needs to be one where you can alter the pressure realy. I used to have one of the hobby compressors that closed up into a little carry case, but even that wouldn't spray faskolor.

i got mine for about £60 and its fine and also works a load of other stuff to.

bigred5765 11-03-2007 09:26 PM

found a couple of cheap ones

or here

Cheers Bigred, didn't know JESpares sold it. Thanks also to Tel

shinytopman 11-03-2007 10:46 PM

B&Q have got a small 6ltr 1.5hp comp on special at the mo think its less than £50 save all the playing about on ebay. Not only that if it gets a fault u got somewhere to take it back!

HTH's

schuwolf 11-03-2007 10:50 PM

I use a Ripmax compressor, seems ok with Faskolor. Have used cans of propellant in hot water with a cheap airbrush and got reasonable result.

schuwolf 11-03-2007 11:16 PM

Here's one I did earlier  I needed a quick shell and blasted on some Faskolor Copper Flake then Black with a cheapo air brush and propellant. Looks good in sunlight!

rich_cree 12-03-2007 10:31 AM

so what is the effect of having too little pressure? splattering?

DCM 12-03-2007 10:53 AM

splattering, yes, and if you got a siphon airbrush, when the pressure drops too low, it won't even spray. It is doable, I have, but the work needed and cost far outweighs ANY bennefits.
