I’ve had a right stroke of luck and have been lent a truly mint condition (as built almost) Optima Mid. It’s so utterly factory and mint I’m scared to use it!

It’s my mates who said it was his pride and joy and it’s been in the loft for nearly 15 years he thinks. I can’t decide what to do though. It’s got a Parma pro stock motor which with charging the original saft batteries was not much more than walking pace fast. I wonder if just newer cells will sort that? I’ve got a stick pack of cheap cells on order to run in this and to utterly abuse as my pack of cells for vintage this winter. Will it take a 19t motor and half decent cells OK belts wise, they are old remember?

The Optima has the original Kyosho mechanical speed control which has a reaction time of about 2 seconds with the std acoms servo on it, so I was going to try to put an electronic speedo in there as well as not to disturb the original wiring, trouble is the only spare speedo I have is a Tekin G11 which isn’t very small.

I’ll get some pics up tonight!

Hi all

Hi I was just trawling for a Transmitter model number and happened on this thread, I don't race but do collect vintage buggies etc and live in York.
Any one else near me?
PS as old school escs go how about one of these

purpletimbo 21-10-2007 02:58 PM

When would next meet be and where?

Love to if i knew where they were? a lot of the links previous in thread don't work
Cheers tim

Stu 21-10-2007 05:02 PM

Tim, why don't you have a go at racing - while we will each be trying to win it's not (or at least it was not last year) the main objective, having a good laugh is.

Good point about the venue - is it Lowfield or Huntington?

Tim, follow this link - http://www.yorcc.org.uk/index_files/map.htm, both venues are on there - someone (G?) will let you know on here which venue it is.

purpletimbo 21-10-2007 05:42 PM

Ah one of the guys NeilD? was on www.rc-racing.org.uk with me until a while ago, is he still in that club?
I might make it to the committee meeting and see whats going on.
Cheers Tim
PS another addition but not that old

Yeh, YORCC are back at Huntington again now that the building work has finished.

There is also a committee meeting this Friday.

Very nice indeed, I have a Tekin 410 but sadly it no longer works. G and s are right, you should come race at the next vintage meeting, 3rd November I think.

purpletimbo 21-10-2007 07:29 PM

Does a Schumacher 2000 USA count as vintage?

super__dan 21-10-2007 08:18 PM

It's 1990 or earlier chassis'd cars so the Blade 2000 is very much out. The optima is very much in though, I'm running the mid version at the vintage rounds (if the cells last 5 mins)

purpletimbo 22-10-2007 01:08 AM

Oh well the Optimas hopped up belt conversion with alloy externally adjustable shocks, so my Optima Guru informed me so will run well, might stick that tekin in and see how she goes

FERRETTI 22-10-2007 08:49 PM

Sorry to jump in on this thread but I've been right through it and unless I've missed something I'm a bit unclear on the requirements for a vehicle to qualify as vintage, has this been clarified yet:wtf: I have a couple of older cars ;) and I'm interested to know which ones maybe acceptable, thanks:)

Northy 22-10-2007 08:56 PM

Hi Ferretti,

We class vintage as chassis's of pre 1990 vintage :D

I hope you can take part. I still haven't built the secret weapon

Pre 1990:confused: I know it's meant to be fun and sorry to seek clarification but aren't some of you chaps running stealth transmissions:wtf: I ask as I don't want to turn up with something that doesn't adhere to the rules.

G

You haven't built it yet:o I thought you would have been winning nationals with it by now:p you know if you don't want it I will gladly have it back:D

Stu 23-10-2007 04:47 PM

To make it simple we have allowed variants of cars that were originally released pre-1990, so a late model RC10 may be actually later than 1990, but for our purpose its just an RC10 so is allowed.

It's really down to the individual racer what they want to run, if they think what they have fits the pre-1990 thing, then thats OK. Obviously anyone who decides to run something that is obviously later than 1990, eg a B2 or maybe a 'modern' CAT will look a bit silly.

FERRETTI 23-10-2007 04:49 PM

:cool:that works for me:cool:

thanks for the info.

super__dan 23-10-2007 05:44 PM

I'm running an RC10 worlds (ish) which as G says is OK.

G - Have you sorted us out a 2wd and seperate 4wd heat yet? ;)

Northy 23-10-2007 05:48 PM

Sorry Dan, there isn't enough of us to justify it :(

G

FERRETTI 24-10-2007 03:42 PM

OK please educate me as to what motor and tires to use (I will be running a 2wd with 2.2s) and where to get them from? I haven't raced buggies since 1998 so I am very much out of touch when it comes to the latest sticky black spinney things.

Don't worry I'm not going to arrive and run away with the honours (I've never been an A finalist:yawn:) but I don't want to be stuck after a long journey doing dough nuts all night either:)

Thanks.

super__dan 24-10-2007 03:57 PM

Schumacher yellow mini spikes will be the best tyre to be on, they only come in 2.2's these days.

I believe it's any motor up to a 19t spec motor, so to be honest any 19t motor would be ideal. I'm hopefully going to have a 19t motor in each car though with the very old cells I'll have in the 4wd they might not even last 5 minutes, it will be a laugh though either way! I also tried a stock motr in the 4wd and whilst it wasn't fast, it wasn't as bad as I feared.

So mini spikes good, mini pins bad/ not allowed correct?

Stu 24-10-2007 04:45 PM

No mini-pins.
We took that decision early on last year, both to keep it 'old(er)-skool' and to avoid excess stress on the cars from too much grip on the carpet sections.

The mini-spikes work well all round, possiby even better on the dusty bits of floor.

FERRETTI 24-10-2007 04:53 PM

purpletimbo 24-10-2007 06:52 PM

Excuse my total racing ignorance, what are the tyres on my Optima then, are they legal for the race?
Cheers Tim

WHITTLER555 24-10-2007 07:19 PM

You might want to invest in some Lazer ZX5/ZXR/ZX wheels and yellow minispikes. You might find the standard Optima kit tyres a little hard and difficult to control on the slippy floor.

purpletimbo 25-10-2007 10:25 AM

I've got loads of ZX wheels/tyres as I bought a pair with 30 or so spares, and my Cat 2000 arrived today with 4 new mini spike rears as well, so I'll bring a selection along if I make it, always a problem I work evenings unfortunately

FERRETTI 28-10-2007 07:50 PM

I understand the committee has decided to limit motor choice to 540 sealed cans, what exactly are we talking here:eh?:, Tamiya silver can motors or any sealed can motor? I ask as I need to go and buy something to run.

Thanks.

purpletimbo 28-10-2007 07:53 PM

Whichever it is don't buy one I must have a dozen of each in shed you're welcome to browse. lol, and you can advise me on tyre choice!

Naaaa, don't worry about that, just bring whatever you have got - as long as it's not a lower wind that 19 you'll be with the rest of us.

I bought a set of Schumacher 2.2 yellow mini spikes standard rear and narrow fronts, hopefully they will be OK.

Northy 05-11-2007 11:22 AM

Who was it that won again?:rolleyes:

super__dan 05-11-2007 12:16 PM

How did it go after I left?

I felt crap all day yesterday but after sleeping lots I'm much better and in work today :)

Stu 05-11-2007 07:28 PM

It was a real shame you were not too well, the mid looked the dogs on the track, first to 16 laps if I remember right.

Can't wait 'till the next meeting - December 8th.

super__dan 05-11-2007 07:55 PM

Stu, I loved driving it, it really was proper good everywhere except utterly dire on the jump, like comedy bad. A drunken hippo on rollerskates would be more consistant.

Who won though, top 3???

Oh I can't make the next one
:(

Stu 05-11-2007 08:07 PM

I think it was G, me, Damian then Jim, not sure of the rest.

The XLS was totally poo on the jump also, the mats under the carpet just made the rear end bounce over the top, downslope or die. I was ace everywhere else though.

mattym0310 02-01-2008 05:31 PM

this car looks very nice!

ben 02-01-2008 05:35 PM

i like. it aaa vera nice
